DBX Commodities is a commodity intelligence firm that turns raw observation into market-grade data. We combine proprietary satellite thermal monitoring (DBX Spectrum) with AIS-derived seaborne flow data to deliver real-time, asset-level intelligence across coal, iron ore, steel, copper, aluminium, and freight.
The core idea is simple: instead of waiting for companies and agencies to disclose what they're doing, we watch — thermal satellite passes over smelters and blast furnaces, vessel movements across global trade routes — and verify industrial activity independently. Our clients are some of the largest commodity traders, hedge funds, and asset managers in the world.
We're a small, technically serious team. You'll work directly with the people building the product and writing the analysis, your work will ship quickly, and the data you maintain feeds decisions that move real markets.
The role
We're hiring a Geospatial Data Engineer to build and maintain the pipelines that sit underneath everything DBX produces. You'll own the flow of data from raw external feeds — AIS vessel tracking, satellite imagery, market, and reference data — through to the clean, reliable, queryable datasets and production models our clients depend on.
This role sits between our data science function — which builds the satellite and flow models — and our analyst function, which turns the output into client-facing intelligence. You'll own the engineering layer that connects the two, completing the core data unit. It's a hands-on role with real ownership early: you won't be a small cog in a large data org, you'll be one of the people the whole pipeline rests on.

What you'll do
- Build, maintain, and scale ETL/ELT pipelines ingesting high-volume AIS vessel-tracking feeds and satellite / earth-observation imagery.
- Develop robust ingestion and processing for time-series and geospatial data, with strong attention to data quality, validation, and monitoring.
- Take analytical models from notebook to production — turning our team's nowcasts, utilisation indices, and flow estimates into reliable, scheduled, monitored jobs.
- Contribute to broader software engineering across the stack: internal APIs, services, tooling, and the systems that deliver data to clients — this is not a pipelines-only role.
- Manage and optimise our databases and cloud infrastructure, keeping pipelines performant and costs sensible.
- Build automated checks so data issues are caught before they reach clients.
What we're looking for
- Mid-level experience (typically 1–5 years) in data engineering or a closely related role.
- Demonstrated experience productionising geospatial or earth-observation (EO) data pipelines. This is central to the role, not a bonus — we want to see that you've taken satellite, raster, or other geospatial data from raw feed to reliable production output.
- Comfortable taking models to production, with strong MLOps practices: scheduling, monitoring, reproducibility, versioning, and deployment.
- Strong Python and SQL.
- Solid grasp of ETL/ELT patterns and orchestration tooling (Airflow, dbt, or equivalent).
- Comfort contributing to broader software/backend engineering, not only data pipelines.
- Experience in a cloud environment (AWS or GCP) and with relational databases.
- A genuine concern for data quality and reliability — you treat a silent pipeline failure as a serious problem, not a minor one.
- Pragmatism and ownership: comfortable in a lean team where you decide how something gets done, not just whether it gets done.

Nice to have
- Experience with specific geospatial tooling (PostGIS, GDAL, rasterio) and SAR or optical satellite imagery.
- Familiarity with time-series databases or very large time-series datasets.
- Exposure to AIS, shipping, energy, or commodities data.
- Interest in commodity markets — you don't need to be an expert, but curiosity about what the data means goes a long way here.
