Role: Data Engineer

Location: Manchester – Hybrid working
Salary: £44k OTE

PHMG is continuing to develop and mature its data capability, focusing on modernising our data platform and enhancing the way we work. As part of this continued development, we are looking to strengthen our Data Engineering team and maximise the value from the wealth of data held across the organisation.

We are looking for a Data Engineer to help design, build and maintain reliable, scalable data solutions. Working as part of an established Data Engineering team, you will contribute to the development of our data platform, strengthen engineering practices and help improve the quality and reliability of data across the organisation.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Data Engineer with strong SQL and Python skills to work with modern cloud data technologies, contribute to our engineering standards and play a part in delivering and evolving PHMG’s Data Strategy.

What you will do:

  • Design, build and maintain scalable, reliable and maintainable data pipelines and datasets.
  • Play a key role in developing and improving our Microsoft Fabric data platform.
  • Contribute to the design and development of data warehouse, lakehouse and data integration solutions.
  • Apply strong engineering practices across source control, CI/CD, testing, documentation, monitoring and error handling.
  • Develop and maintain data models to support reporting, analytics and wider business use cases.
  • Collaborate with other Data Engineers and technical teams to improve data architecture, platform performance and engineering processes.
  • Work closely with Reporting, Insights and Data Science teams to understand requirements and deliver effective data solutions.

The person we are looking for will have the following experience:

  • Strong SQL skills, including experience writing and optimising complex queries and data transformations.
  • Strong Python skills, with practical experience using Python for data engineering, data processing or automation.
  • Proven experience designing and building data pipelines, with a strong understanding of modern ETL/ELT practices.
  • Experience working with modern cloud data platforms and orchestration technologies. Experience within the Microsoft data ecosystem would be advantageous.
  • Experience of data modelling for reporting and analytics, including dimensional modelling and designing datasets for downstream consumption.
  • Experience with modern engineering practices including Git-based source control, CI/CD, testing, monitoring and error handling.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working effectively within agile, cross-functional teams.

Nice-to-have experience:

  • Microsoft Fabric, including Warehouse, Lakehouse and Data Factory capabilities.
  • Infrastructure as Code approaches and tools such as Terraform.
  • API-based, event-driven or operational system integrations, such as Salesforce.

The Team

The Data Engineering team sits within PHMG’s wider Data function and is responsible for building and maintaining the platforms, pipelines and data models that underpin reporting, analytics and data science across the organisation.

The team works closely with Reporting & Insights, Data Science, IT and other business teams to make data reliable, accessible and useful across the business. We are continuing to strengthen our engineering practices, improve our platform and build greater resilience and consistency across the data estate.
