About The Role
The principal data engineer at IG Group will play a critical role in shaping and leading the company’s data platform strategy, particularly focusing on the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) ecosystem. This role involves owning the end-to-end technical architecture of IG’s GCP data platform, including core data lakes, ingestion pipelines, transformation processes, and integration services. The successful candidate will lead high-complexity projects such as migrating legacy systems from AWS and on-premises infrastructure to GCP-native solutions, ensuring seamless transition and minimal disruption. They will define platform standards, interfaces, and self-service patterns that enable various business divisions to build and deploy data models safely and efficiently against trusted data sources. Emphasizing data quality as a core principle, the Principal Data Engineer will establish data contracts, observability, and automated alerting mechanisms to uphold data integrity across all layers. Acting as a senior technical liaison, they will collaborate with stakeholders from Compliance, Marketing, Finance, Data Science, and other divisions, translating business requirements into scalable, well-architected engineering solutions. Additionally, they will mentor and review the work of other data engineers, uphold engineering standards, and ensure delivery excellence across the global teams based in London, India, and Poland. Qualifications
- Hands-on experience designing and operating large-scale data pipelines on GCP, including BigQuery, Cloud Composer/Airflow, and Google Cloud Storage (GCS).
- Proven expertise with real-time streaming architectures, particularly with Apache Kafka.
- Demonstrated leadership or mentoring experience within a data engineering team, including setting standards and conducting code and design reviews.
- Strong knowledge of data quality practices such as data contracts, pipeline observability, SLA/SLO definitions, and automated alerting and remediation.
- Proficiency in SQL transformation patterns and modern data tooling such as dbt.
- Experience managing data ingestion through third-party connectors and in-house integrations.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of working effectively with cross-functional teams and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience working within a regulated financial services environment and familiarity with structured delivery disciplines such as sprint methodologies and change control processes.
Responsibilities
- Own and oversee the technical architecture of IG’s GCP data platform, including core data lakes, ingestion pipelines, and transformation layers.
- Lead the delivery of complex projects, including migrating legacy systems from AWS and on-premises infrastructure to GCP-native solutions.
- Define platform standards, interfaces, and self-service patterns to enable divisions to build and deploy data models securely and efficiently.
- Establish and promote data quality practices across the organization through data contracts, observability, and automated remediation processes.
- Act as the primary technical contact for stakeholders across various business units, translating requirements into scalable engineering solutions.
- Conduct code reviews, technical mentoring, and set engineering standards to elevate the technical capabilities of the data engineering teams.
- Ensure quality and consistency in third-party engagement, overseeing technical deliverables and maintainability of assets.
- Shape project delivery processes, including sprint planning, risk management, and reporting on key metrics such as data freshness and pipeline SLAs.
- Maintain a focus on continuous improvement, adopting best practices in data engineering and cloud architecture to support IG’s strategic goals.
