Azure SQL Data Engineer | Greenfield Data Platform | Azure Data Factory
Are you an Azure Data Engineer who enjoys building modern data platforms from the ground up? We're working with an organisation embarking on a significant data transformation programme and seeking an experienced Azure SQL Data Engineer to play a key role in the delivery of a brand-new Azure Data Warehouse solution.
This is an opportunity to join a greenfield project from the beginning, working alongside experienced architects and technical leaders to build scalable, cloud-native data solutions using the latest Microsoft technologies.
You'll be involved across the full delivery lifecycle, from pipeline development and warehouse implementation through to deployment, testing and optimisation.
The Opportunity
As part of a growing data team, you'll be responsible for designing, building and maintaining Azure-based data solutions that support business-critical reporting and analytics. You'll work closely with Architecture, Engineering and Business teams to deliver robust, production-ready data platforms while helping shape best practices around quality, automation and performance.
What You'll Be Doing
- Building and maintaining Azure data pipelines and integration processes
- Developing ETL and ELT solutions using Azure Data Factory
- Designing and supporting Azure SQL Data Warehouse components
- Creating scalable and maintainable metadata-driven data processing solutions
- Supporting data modelling and warehouse implementation activities
- Contributing to Power BI datasets and reporting solutions
- Working alongside senior architects to implement technical designs and best practices
- Participating in code reviews, testing and quality assurance activities
- Supporting CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes through Azure DevOps
- Troubleshooting performance issues and resolving technical challenges
- Collaborating with stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into technical solutions
- Producing clear technical documentation and implementation guidance

What We're Looking For
Essential Skills & Experience
- Proven experience delivering Azure Data Engineering solutions
- Strong hands-on expertise with:
- Azure SQL
- Azure Data Factory
- Azure DevOps
- Experience developing and supporting Data Warehouse environments
- Excellent SQL development and optimisation skills
- Experience building scalable, metadata-driven data processing solutions
- Knowledge of source control, CI/CD and modern DevOps practices
- Experience working within Agile delivery teams
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a wider delivery team

Nice To Have
- Experience developing Power BI datasets and semantic models
- Understanding of data modelling and dimensional design principles
- Exposure to architectural design processes and solution frameworks
- Consultancy or client-facing project experience
- Experience working within regulated or security-conscious environments
- Current UK Security Clearance (SC) or eligibility to obtain clearance
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate
Role overview
Data Engineer (Azure/SQL)
- Fully remote (UK only) with ad hoc meetings to South Wales/Southwest
- Day rate - £475.00 - £500.00
- 3 months initially + likely extension
- IR35 status is to be confirmed but likely outside (pending)
- 1 stage MS Teams interview
- Start date end of September ideally
