Responsible for extending and supporting the data lake and data warehouse that underpin reporting and analytics solutions within the corporate Digital team by ingesting, integrating and transforming data from multiple sources.

The Data Engineer will work collaboratively with data architects, analysts, business SMEs, Digital project teams, and technology partners to translate business and data requirements into reliable, scalable, and maintainable technical solutions. This role will also support the transition of data engineering deliverables into operational service, ensuring that solutions are developed with data quality, security, governance, performance, long-term support, and continuous improvement in mind.

You’ll be responsible for:

Data engineering, design, and development:

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable, reliable, and efficient data pipelines, dataflows, and data engineering solutions using Microsoft Azure data services and related technologies.
  • Integrate and transform data from multiple structured and unstructured sources to support trusted reporting, analytics, and business data products.
  • Develop robust end-to-end systems with long-term maintenance, supportability, scalability, and performance in mind.
  • Collaborate with the data architecture team to understand, assess, and implement changes to data architecture, information architecture, and platform design.
  • Translate business, reporting, and analytical requirements into appropriate technical designs, data models, and integration patterns.

Data integration, quality, and performance:

  • Building and optimize ETL/ELT processes, queries, dataflows, and data models to improve performance, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Managing and securing the flow of data across the data platform, ensuring appropriate controls are applied to sensitive or business-critical information.
  • Supporting the implementation of data quality, data governance, and engineering best practices across data pipelines and analytical solutions.
  • Supporting Data Analysts and the wider self-service community by providing reliable, well-structured data assets for dashboards, reports, and analytical use cases.

Security, governance, and service transition:

  • Ensuring data engineering development follows secure software development principles, including coding standards, testing, peer review, version control, and controlled promotion between environments.
  • Engaging with IT Service Management to transition data engineering deliverables successfully into service provision and ongoing operational support.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of relevant technology platforms, emerging Azure services, Microsoft Fabric capabilities, and data engineering practices, evaluating opportunities to improve the data platform where appropriate.
  • Working collaboratively towards the common goal of net zero carbon transition, sharing responsibility for the proactive identification and management of associated carbon emissions and reductions during the delivery of work.

You’ll need to have:

  • Tracking record of delivering well-engineered data solutions using good engineering practices, including testing, CI/CD, peer review, documentation, source control, and appropriate release management.
  • Experience working in a similar role on large projects or programmes, ideally involving multiple systems, stakeholders, and data domains.
  • Full project lifecycle experience, from requirements and design through to development, testing, deployment, service transition, and operational support.
  • Knowledge of IT Service Management based on ITIL practices.
