About The Role
The Data Engineer role at BAE Systems Digital Intelligence offers an exciting opportunity for experienced professionals to contribute to critical projects that impact national security and digital resilience. As a Data Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, and supporting data collection, integration, and ETL applications. Your work will ensure that vital data is accessible, structured, and governed effectively to meet the needs of key stakeholders. This position involves modeling data requirements, sources, and flows, as well as defining data lifecycle management policies to maintain data integrity and security. You will utilize a variety of open-source and proprietary tools to create scalable data solutions, support metadata management, and facilitate data discovery and governance. The role offers hybrid working options in London or Manchester, with flexibility for full or part-time arrangements, fostering a healthy work-life balance.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in data engineering, analysis, or science, with proficiency in programming languages such as Python and experience working with big data technologies. Demonstrable experience with ETL tools, data modeling, and data management platforms—particularly NoSQL and unstructured data solutions—is essential. A solid understanding of open-source data engineering tools and the ability to evaluate and recommend appropriate platforms are highly valued. Candidates should have a good grasp of database concepts, including data lifecycle management, metadata, and records management. Previous experience in cyber security or intelligence domains is desirable but not mandatory. A proactive attitude towards learning new technologies and adapting to evolving project requirements is crucial for success in this role.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and support data collection, integration, and ETL applications to facilitate data availability for stakeholders and technical interfaces.
- Model data requirements, sources, and flows to bring structure and clarity to projects and programs.
- Define data creation, mastery, and destruction processes to ensure proper control over data assets' lifecycle.
- Select and implement suitable data management products for collecting, storing, visualizing, and governing data and metadata.
- Establish metadata standards to enhance searchability and support governance frameworks, including records management for unstructured data.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand data needs and deliver scalable solutions aligned with organizational goals.
- Evaluate emerging data engineering tools and platforms, providing recommendations based on project requirements and technical feasibility.
- Maintain documentation and ensure compliance with data security and privacy policies.
