About The Role
The Principal Data Engineer at IG Group will play a pivotal role in shaping and maintaining the company’s data infrastructure. This senior-level position involves overseeing the end-to-end technical architecture of IG’s GCP data platform, including core data lakes, real-time ingestion systems, and transformation processes. The successful candidate will lead the migration of legacy systems from AWS and on-premises environments to GCP-native capabilities, ensuring seamless integration and high data quality. This role requires a strategic thinker with hands-on expertise in designing large-scale data pipelines, real-time streaming architectures, and data governance practices. The Principal Data Engineer will serve as a key technical advisor and collaborator across multiple divisions, translating business requirements into scalable, reliable, and secure data solutions. The role emphasizes establishing engineering standards, mentoring teams, and driving data quality initiatives to support IG’s data-driven decision-making and AI initiatives.

Qualifications
- Extensive hands-on experience designing and operating large-scale data pipelines on Google Cloud Platform (BigQuery, Cloud Composer/Airflow, GCS)
- Proven expertise in real-time streaming architectures, including Apache Kafka and related technologies
- Strong leadership skills with experience mentoring and guiding data engineering teams
- Deep understanding of data quality practices, including data contracts, observability, SLA/SLO management, and automated alerting
- Proficiency in SQL transformation patterns and modern tooling such as dbt
- Experience managing ingestion estates with third-party connectors and in-house integrations
- Excellent communication skills, capable of working effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Knowledge of structured delivery disciplines within a regulated financial environment
Responsibilities
- Own the technical architecture of IG’s GCP data platform, including core lake, ingestion, transformation, and integration services
- Lead the migration efforts from legacy AWS and on-premises systems to GCP-native solutions, ensuring minimal disruption and high data integrity
- Define platform standards, interfaces, and self-service patterns to empower divisions to build and manage their own data models securely
- Establish and enforce data quality standards across the organization, including data contracts, observability, and SLA/SLO adherence
- Act as the senior technical contact for stakeholders in Compliance, Marketing, Finance, Data Science, and other divisions, translating requirements into scalable engineering solutions
- Set and uphold engineering standards through code reviews, design reviews, and technical mentorship to enhance team capabilities
- Manage third-party augmentation resources, ensuring deliverables align with IG’s standards and leave maintainable assets
- Shape sprint planning, monitor engineering metrics, and report on data pipeline health, data freshness, and delivery performance to senior leadership
