About Us
Steer Automotive Group is the UK's largest independent accident repair group, with more than 200 sites and around 4,500 colleagues. We're investing in a modern data platform on Microsoft Fabric to replace an ageing reporting environment, and this is the first dedicated data engineering hire into our Group IT team.
Role Overview
You'll work alongside our data consultant's delivery team through the platform build, learning the architecture, pipelines and governance model first-hand. As the build matures, you'll take increasing ownership of the platform and become Steer's technical voice as our consultant's role moves from delivery to advisory. You'll work with our BI Analysts, who own reporting and dashboards, while you focus on the engineering layer beneath: ingestion, transformation and platform reliability.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Key Responsibilities
- Work through the Fabric medallion (Bronze / Silver / Gold) build with our consultant's engineers, using Pipelines, Notebooks, Spark, OneLake and Delta Lake in a live delivery setting.
- Take ownership of ingestion from our core systems (Autoflow, Eclipse, People, NetSuite and file-based sources), keeping pipelines and refreshes reliable.
- Own day-to-day platform health, including capacity monitoring and resolving failures without relying on external support.
- Apply data governance and security controls, including row-level security and Entra-based access, and contribute to the data catalogue and lineage in Microsoft Purview.
- Support Git-based CI/CD and separate production and non-production environments.
- Feed practical, delivery-informed input into the roadmap for future use cases such as operational KPIs and advanced analytics.

Essential:
- Proven hands-on experience delivering data engineering solutions in Microsoft Fabric, Azure Databricks or Azure Synapse.
- Strong Spark/PySpark and/or T-SQL skills, applied to production data pipelines.

- Experience with Power BI semantic models and DAX.
- Understanding of data governance, access control and GDPR-aware data handling.
- Experience of working in a small team and learning directly from external delivery partners or consultants.
