About The Role

Ocho is seeking a highly experienced Staff Data Engineer to join its Belfast-based team, offering a hybrid or remote working arrangement. As a key member of the Insights team, you will have full ownership of designing, building, and maintaining large-scale, distributed data pipelines and storage systems that underpin critical decision-making processes for some of the world’s leading retail brands. This is a senior, hands-on role that requires technical expertise, strategic thinking, and leadership capabilities. You will be instrumental in shaping the architecture of our data infrastructure, setting engineering standards, and influencing how the platform scales as the business continues to grow. Your work will directly impact the efficiency, reliability, and scalability of our data systems, supporting billions of consumer interactions and enabling data-driven insights at a global level.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 7+ years of experience designing and building robust, scalable, and distributed data systems and pipelines.
  • Proficiency with orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow or Dagster.
  • Extensive experience with data transformation and analytics tools including dbt, Spark, SQL, Athena/Trino, Redshift, Snowflake, PostgreSQL, or MySQL.
  • Strong knowledge of public cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, along with infrastructure as code tools like Terraform.
  • Solid understanding of CI/CD pipelines, version control with git, agile methodologies, and containerization technologies.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex distributed systems.
  • Desirable: Experience with event-driven architectures, streaming technologies such as Kafka or Flink, and prior technical leadership or mentoring experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain large-scale, distributed data pipelines and storage solutions that support core business functions.
  • Ensure the reliability, scalability, and performance of the data infrastructure, implementing best practices for data quality and security.
  • Optimize data storage and retrieval processes to improve efficiency across the platform.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including data science, analytics, and engineering, to translate business requirements into effective technical solutions.
  • Champion software engineering best practices, including code quality, documentation, and testing standards.
  • Proactively troubleshoot and resolve issues within distributed systems to minimize downtime and maintain operational excellence.
  • Mentor and influence other engineers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends to continuously enhance the data platform’s capabilities.
