Data Engineer – Microsoft Fabric
£55,000–£65,000 + 10% bonus + 7% pension + benefits
Birmingham | Hybrid
Also open to people based around London, Reading or Leeds
Building something in Microsoft Fabric is one thing. Staying around to support it, improve it and see how your decisions work in production is another. That’s the kind of experience we’re looking for here.
A UK Wealth Management business is moving its enterprise data platform from Azure Synapse to Microsoft Fabric and is adding another hands-on Data Engineer to the team.
This isn’t a leadership role. You’ll have experienced engineers around you, but you’ll be trusted to take ownership of your own work: understanding the requirement, working through the technical problem, building the solution and getting it into production. Just as importantly, you’ll remain involved afterwards.
What you’ll be working on
Microsoft Fabric is central to where the data platform is heading. You’ll work across:
- Microsoft Fabric, including Lakehouse, Warehouse and OneLake
- Building and improving data pipelines
- ETL/ELT
- Power BI
- SQL and SQL Server
- Data modelling
- Azure Data Lake
- Internal and third-party API integrations
- Azure DevOps and Git
- CI/CD and production deployments
- Supporting existing Azure Synapse solutions during the transition
Synapse experience would be useful, but it isn’t essential. The strategic direction is Microsoft Fabric.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What we’re looking for
Microsoft Fabric and Power BI are both important requirements. For Fabric specifically, you should be working hands-on with it in your current or most recent role.
We’re looking for more than exposure to a short implementation or migration project. You should have enough experience with Fabric to understand what happens after something goes live: supporting what you’ve built, investigating production problems, making improvements and evolving solutions as requirements change. Ideally, you’ll have developed that experience over a reasonable period of time. We’re more interested in the depth and continuity of your Fabric experience than imposing an arbitrary number of years.
You’ll also need a good grounding in Data Engineering across areas such as:
- SQL and data modelling
- ETL/ELT
- Azure data platforms
- API integrations
- Git/source control
- CI/CD
- Building, deploying and supporting production data solutions
You’ll need previous experience developing and deploying software or data solutions within a highly regulated environment. Financial Services experience is strongly preferred, particularly Wealth Management, Banking or Insurance.
Where AI fits
You don’t need to be an AI or Machine Learning Engineer.

Get help with your application
Your very own career expert that helps elevate your application to the next level.
The business is increasing its investment in AI, including Azure AI Foundry and wider Microsoft AI technologies. Some practical use of Copilot or another LLM within your engineering work would be useful, whether that’s development, debugging, code validation or documentation. You’ll have the opportunity to build on that exposure as AI becomes more integrated into the wider data environment.
Location and working arrangement
The role is open to people living within approximately one hour’s commute of Birmingham, London, Reading or Leeds.
Current office attendance is typically at least two days per month in either Birmingham or London. There is the potential for this to increase to up to three days per week in future, depending on business requirements, so you’ll need to be comfortable with that before applying. This means the current working pattern offers considerable flexibility, but the role shouldn’t be viewed as permanently remote.
Package
- £55,000–£65,000 basic salary
- 10% annual bonus
- 7% employer pension contribution
- Private Medical Insurance
- Income Protection
If you’re already working hands-on with Fabric, can take ownership of your engineering work and have experience supporting what you’ve built once it’s in production, I’m happy to give you the full context on the team, platform and plans.
