About The Role
The Principal Data Engineer at IG Group will play a pivotal role in leading the design, development, and management of the company’s data platform. This position involves owning the end-to-end technical architecture of IG’s GCP-based data ecosystem, including core data lakes, ingestion pipelines, and transformation layers. The successful candidate will lead high-stakes projects such as migrating legacy systems from AWS and on-premises to GCP-native solutions, ensuring seamless integration and data quality. Collaborating with cross-functional teams across Compliance, Marketing, Finance, Data Science, and regional divisions, the Principal Data Engineer will translate complex requirements into scalable, reliable, and secure data solutions. This role also emphasizes establishing best practices for data quality, observability, and automation, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence. As a senior technical leader, the individual will mentor engineering teams, set engineering standards, and oversee third-party integrations, ensuring the delivery of maintainable and compliant assets aligned with IG’s strategic objectives.

Qualifications
- Hands-on experience designing and operating large-scale data pipelines on Google Cloud Platform (BigQuery, Cloud Composer/Airflow, GCS)
- Proven knowledge of Apache Kafka and real-time streaming architectures
- Experience leading or mentoring data engineering teams, with a focus on setting standards and conducting code reviews
- Strong understanding of data quality practices, including data contracts, observability, SLA/SLO definition, and automated alerting
- Expertise in SQL transformation patterns and modern tooling such as dbt
- Experience managing ingestion estates with third-party connectors and in-house integrations
- Excellent communication skills, capable of working effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Experience in regulated financial services environments and structured delivery disciplines
Responsibilities
- Own the technical architecture of IG’s GCP data platform, including core lake, ingestion pipelines, and transformation layers
- Lead the delivery of complex projects, including migration from legacy AWS and on-premises systems to GCP-native solutions
- Define platform standards, interfaces, and self-service patterns to enable teams to build and own data models securely and efficiently
- Establish and promote data quality standards across the organization, including SLA/SLO monitoring, observability, and automated remediation
- Act as the senior technical point of contact for stakeholders across various divisions, translating requirements into scalable engineering solutions
- Set and uphold engineering standards through reviews, mentorship, and reusable frameworks to elevate team capabilities
- Oversee third-party staff augmentation, ensuring adherence to IG’s standards and delivery quality
- Maintain delivery rigor by shaping sprint cadences, early risk identification, and reporting on engineering metrics and data pipeline health
