Lead Data Engineer

As the Lead Data Engineer, you will be responsible for designing and delivering a scalable, reliable, and maintainable cloud-based data platform that supports business reporting, analytics, and future growth.

The organisation currently receives data from multiple business systems, including a CRM platform, digital advertising platforms, website analytics, and other operational applications. Existing data is stored within Google BigQuery, but improvements are required around data quality, pipeline reliability, scalability, and platform governance.

In this role, you will:

  • Assess the current data environment, identifying technical challenges, risks, and priorities.
  • Design a high-level data architecture for ingesting, transforming, and storing data within Google Cloud Platform, making pragmatic tooling decisions with budget considerations in mind.
  • Build scalable data pipelines capable of handling both high-frequency event-driven data (such as CRM updates and business events) and scheduled batch data from external platforms.
  • Improve data quality by implementing validation, testing, monitoring, and governance processes to ensure trusted reporting and analytics.
  • Integrate data from CRM, marketing, web analytics, and operational systems into a unified data platform.
  • Establish best practices for pipeline monitoring, observability, reliability, and ongoing maintenance to support long-term scalability.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across the business to ensure the data platform enables reporting, analytics, and data science initiatives.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
