FP&A Data Engineer (Reverse Engineering & FP&A Microsoft Fabric)
Job Description
This contract role focuses on reverse engineering existing reporting and data flows to support the transition to a new FP&A and Microsoft Fabric Data Lakehouse platform. You will work directly with legacy applications that lack technical documentation, uncover how data moves through the estate, and then rebuild critical reporting in Datarails while configuring the new Data Lakehouse to a high standard. This is a hands-on technical position requiring deep analytical skills, strong documentation capabilities, and the ability to translate complex, undocumented logic into robust, modern data solutions.
Responsibilities
- Trace and document end-to-end data flows across legacy applications, following data from source systems through every intermediate step to the final reports or outputs in the absence of reliable specifications.
- Reverse engineer Power BI reports, including data models, DAX measures, query folding and Power Query (M) transformations, to determine exactly how each report processes the underlying data.
- Reverse engineer VBA and Office-based logic embedded in spreadsheets or Access tools, including macros that move, reshape or calculate data outside the formal data pipeline.
- Reverse engineer stored procedures and other database logic (such as T-SQL or equivalent) to identify joins, filters, aggregations and business rules applied in the database layer.
- Identify and document all points of data mapping or augmentation, including lookups, manual overrides, reference data, currency or unit conversions and allocations across the full source-to-target flow.
- Rebuild reverse-engineered reports in Datarails, faithfully reproducing original logic at pace to maintain reporting continuity as legacy systems are decommissioned.
- Design and configure the Microsoft Fabric Data Lakehouse using best-practice patterns for data ingestion, layered storage (for example bronze, silver and gold layers), data modelling and security.
- Apply best-practice configuration from both FP&A tooling and the Fabric/Data Lakehouse ecosystem, proactively highlighting weaknesses in current or proposed setups and recommending improvements.
- Produce clear, reusable documentation of source-to-target mappings and transformation logic so that the knowledge created during the engagement is retained and easily understood by others.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to clarify requirements, validate findings and ensure that rebuilt reports and data structures meet business expectations.

Essential Skills
- Strong experience reverse engineering complex data flows and undocumented applications.
- Proficiency with Power BI, including data modelling, DAX measures, query folding and Power Query (M) transformations.
- Hands-on experience with VBA and Visual Basic, particularly in Excel and Access environments.
- Experience reverse engineering stored procedures and database logic using T-SQL or similar languages.
- Proven ability in data mapping, including lookups, manual overrides, reference data, currency or unit conversions and allocations.
- Practical experience with FP&A processes and tooling.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to explain complex technical findings in clear, accessible language.
- Ability to work independently in a hands-on technical role and deliver at pace.
- Solid understanding of Windows-based environments for data and reporting solutions.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience designing and configuring Microsoft Fabric Data Lakehouse or similar modern data platforms.
- Familiarity with layered data architectures such as bronze, silver and gold patterns.
- Exposure to machine learning concepts and their application within data platforms.
- Experience producing high-quality technical documentation for data flows, mappings and transformation logic.
- Background in engineering or data engineering disciplines.
- Experience working with blue-chip or large enterprise environments.
