Job Purpose
We are seeking an experienced Data Engineer to take full ownership of the data infrastructure underpinning decision-making across Truvi. You'll join a close-knit team of five — a Head of Data, a Data Scientist, two Data Analysts, and you as the team's sole engineer — alongside close collaboration with the wider Engineering team.
This isn't a role where you'll be one of many engineers: you'll be the technical backbone of the Data Team, owning how the data platform itself is built, run, and evolved.
You'll keep the platform stable and reliable day to day — pipelines, warehouse, and the data products the business depends on — while also shaping what it becomes next: which tools we adopt, how we scale, and what "good" looks like technically for the team. Close collaboration with Engineering matters here and will only grow in importance: as we move toward serving data science outputs in production (for example, ML models exposed via API), speaking the same technical language and agreeing on shared standards across teams becomes essential rather than optional. You'll also work closely with Data Analysts and Data Scientists to make sure data is trustworthy and accessible day to day.

Our current stack: Azure for cloud infrastructure, PostgreSQL for the warehouse, dbt for transformation, Airbyte plus in-house Python tooling for ingestion, Power BI for reporting, and Azure DevOps for project tracking. You don't need prior experience with all of these, but you should be comfortable operating in a similar modern data stack.
This is a role with genuine autonomy and impact: you'll set the technical standards rather than inherit them, and your judgment on architecture and tooling will directly shape how an ambitious company uses data to power its strategy, operations, and growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the stability, security, and documentation of our data infrastructure end to end — you're the technical backbone for data at Truvi.
- Design, build, and maintain data ingestion and transformation pipelines, integrating new sources into the warehouse while safeguarding data quality.
- Own the reliability and uptime of the data products the business depends on day to day — the BI/reporting layer, internal APIs exposing warehouse data, and integrations pushing data into downstream tools.
- Enable Data Analysts and Scientists by providing clean, accessible, well-modelled data, and support productionizing outputs from data science work in collaboration with that function.
- Champion best practices across the team — code quality, testing, documentation, and architectural decisions — raising the technical bar as the sole engineering voice in the data function.
- Partner closely with the Head of Data on platform direction: evaluating and selecting tools, planning infrastructure evolution, and making build-vs-buy calls as the platform scales.
- Build internal tooling (APIs, CLIs, scripts) that make the rest of the Data Team more self-sufficient.
- Be the primary point of technical judgment on a small team — comfortable being the person others defer to on "how should we actually build this.”
Required Qualifications
- At least 4 years of experience as a Data Engineer or similar role.
- Strong experience with relational databases — advanced SQL, performance troubleshooting, permissions, and data modelling.
- Hands-on, production experience with dbt.
- Experience building ETL/ELT pipelines with Python and SQL.
- Comfortable across the full delivery chain: cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure), Linux administration, Docker, and Git.
- Demonstrated ability to set technical direction — translating ambiguous business needs into a technical plan and owning architecture decisions, not just executing a spec.

Nice to Have
- Specific experience with Azure.
- Experience productionizing or serving machine learning models (e.g. notebook-to-API transitions, monitoring served models).
- Hands-on experience with infra provisioning/management tools (Terraform, Ansible, etc.).
- Experience with CI/CD.
- Specific experience with PostgreSQL and/or SQL Server.
- Experience working with orchestration engines (e.g. Airflow, Prefect, Dagster).
- Experience with data integration tools (Airbyte, Fivetran, Stitch).
- Experience with visualization/BI tools (Power BI, Looker, Tableau, etc.) — you'll be supporting the reliability of this layer even if you're not building reports in it.
- Prior experience as the sole or most senior data engineer at a growing company — knows what it's like to own the whole stack.

Salary & Benefits
- £50,000–£60,000, depending on experience.
