Head of Data Engineering

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a globally recognised transportation and logistics organisation as it undergoes a major cloud and data transformation. You'll take ownership of the data engineering function, shape the long-term strategy, and build a high-performing team that will have a direct impact on business-wide decision making.
The Company
Our client is a leading international logistics and transportation business operating at global scale. Backed by a major multinational group, they are investing heavily in modernising their technology and data capabilities, transitioning from legacy systems to a cloud-native data platform. This role offers the chance to lead that transformation while building a sustainable in-house engineering capability.
The Role
- Lead, mentor and develop a team of 8-10 Data Engineers across onshore and offshore locations
- Define and deliver the data engineering strategy, roadmap and best practices
- Drive the migration from legacy on-premise technology to a modern AWS and Snowflake data platform
- Build internal capability and reduce reliance on external contractors
- Partner closely with Architecture, Analytics and senior business stakeholders
- Oversee platform reliability, support processes and engineering standards
- Provide technical leadership across data platform and engineering initiatives

Your Skills and Experience
- Strong background in Data Engineering with previous people leadership experience
- Experience managing engineering teams of roughly 8-10 individuals
- Strong knowledge of Python, SQL, ETL/ELT pipelines and data warehousing concepts
- Experience working with cloud platforms, ideally AWS and Snowflake
- Good understanding of data modelling and modern data architecture principles
- Experience delivering cloud transformation or platform modernisation programmes
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
- Comfortable leading teams through organisational change and growth
