Data Engineering Technical Lead
Data Engineering Technical Lead needed for a large, well established UK business in Manchester that is investing heavily in its data platform. You will be the person who decides how data engineering is done here, and who makes sure it is done that way.
This is a senior role with no line management. It sits between the architects, who set the direction, and the engineers, who do the build. You take the architecture and turn it into working practice: the rules, the templates and the clearly scoped pieces of work an engineering team can deliver against. Then you check that what comes back is right.
What you'll be doing
- Owning the engineering standards for the data platform, from first design through to release and support
- Signing off designs and delivered work against the architecture
- Shaping the integrations between the main business systems and the platform, and the approach each one should follow
- Running the release process for data code, so every change is assessed, traceable and ready to be supported
- Taking the technical lead on incidents and recurring problems, then changing the standards so they don't repeat
- Cutting out duplicated effort and one-off builds that make the platform harder to run
- Advising people across the business on what the platform can do, what it can't, and where the risks are
- Picking up the hardest engineering yourself when it matters

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
