Job Summary

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is the UK’s largest producer of official statistics, covering a range of key economic, social and demographic topics. These include measuring changes in the value of the UK economy, estimating the size, geographic distribution and characteristics of the population, and providing indicators of price inflation, employment, earnings, crime and migration.

The Data Operations team facilitate safe and secure ingest and access to data for users/stakeholders across ONS, facilitating demands for data use following the enactment of the Digital Economy Act. This role will support the division in delivering a professional service to users/stakeholders.

As part of the team, you will build successful working relationships with team members, and key internal stakeholders that improve the value of services provided. You’ll be working in a specific area of the team, using various project management techniques to ensure effective delivery of our products and services to ensure timely delivery of data for ONS statistical processing, managing expectations to ensure successful outcomes.

The purpose of the EO post is to process regular and on demand service procedures applying clearly defined standards to underpin data operations and support internal users.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Complete assigned tasks for ingest and access of data to enable an effective service.
  • Understand data management processes including the ingest of data and providing access to data.
  • Able to communicate progress with stakeholders.
  • Contribute to maintaining up-to-date processes.
  • Administration of the service mailbox.
  • Review and maintain documentation.
  • Provide general administrative support as required.

Additional Tasks Will Include

  • Receive, process and validate data received from a range of internal and external sources, ensuring it meets required quality and governance standards.
  • Undertake data preparation, maintenance and disposal activities in accordance with agreed procedures, service standards and retention requirements.
  • Investigate and resolve routine data issues, escalating complex cases where appropriate.
  • Support internal stakeholders by responding to service requests, providing updates and maintaining accurate records of completed activities.
  • Contribute to the review of operational processes and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, quality and customer experience.
  • Produce and maintain documentation, guidance and records to support the effective delivery of Data Operations services.

This vacancy is using Success Profiles, and will assess your Behaviours and Experience.

Security Clearance

For ONS the requirement for SC clearance is to have been present in the UK for 3 consecutive years immediately prior to applying and the department will consider eligibility by exception on a case-by-case basis. You will be asked to provide information regarding your UK residency during your application, and failure to provide this will result in your application being rejected.

At the point of SC application, you will need to provide or give access to the following evidence:

  • Departmental or company records (personnel files, staff reports, sick leave reports and security records)
  • UK criminal records covering both spent and unspent criminal records
  • Your credit and financial history with a credit reference agency
  • Security Services records

ONS is unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role. Applicants must have a valid right to work in the UK when employment commences. If you are currently in the UK on a time-limited visa, it must have at least 18 months remaining at the point of application.

The assessment process at the application stage will be based on your work history, CV, skills, experience, and personal statement. It is important that your application is tailored to highlight the skills, knowledge, and experience relevant to the role.

A personal statement is required at application stage, the maximum word count allowed is 1000 words, which should not be exceeded. As these criteria are scored, it is advisable to give clear examples for each one, including the impact of your actions, ideally utilising the STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action, Result).

Candidates will be invited to interview based on their merit order, with those achieving the highest scores being prioritised.
