Data Platform Engineer
Newcastle (2 days per week in office) | £73,000 - £84,000 + Benefits
Are you a hands-on Data Platform Engineer who enjoys combining technical ownership with platform strategy? This is an opportunity to join a growing data and innovation function where you will play a key role in shaping and scaling a modern Azure-based data platform that supports advanced analytics and AI initiatives across the business.
The Company
They are a large international organisation investing heavily in their data and AI capabilities. Their newly established innovation and data team is focused on delivering data-driven products, improving business decision-making, and enabling future AI solutions.
You will join a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment where Data Engineering, Data Science, AI, and Product teams work closely together. The culture is hands-on, delivery-focused, and offers the opportunity to influence technical direction while working alongside experienced leaders in data and technology.
The Role
As a Data Platform Engineer, you will take ownership of the overall health, scalability, and performance of the data platform while remaining hands-on with technology and operational delivery.

Responsibilities include:
- Managing and enhancing a modern Azure-based data platform
- Ensuring platform reliability, security, governance, and operational excellence
- Supporting and optimising services across Azure, Microsoft Fabric, Databricks, and related technologies
- Working closely with infrastructure, networking, architecture, and security teams
- Enabling Data Engineers to build and deploy scalable data solutions efficiently
- Driving platform improvements, monitoring, observability, and automation initiatives
- Supporting release management, CI/CD practices, and infrastructure-as-code frameworks
- Investigating performance issues, troubleshooting technical challenges, and implementing sustainable solutions
- Contributing to platform architecture decisions and clearly communicating technical rationale to stakeholders
- Promoting best practice across support, governance, documentation, and operational readiness
Your Skills & Experience
- Strong commercial experience supporting cloud-based data platforms within Azure environments
- Experience with Azure Data Factory (ADF)
- Exposure to Microsoft Fabric, Azure Databricks, or similar modern data platform technologies
- Knowledge of platform architecture, scalability, performance optimisation, and operational support
- Understanding of CI/CD, Azure DevOps, Git, and deployment automation
- Experience with monitoring, logging, observability, and incident management processes
- Knowledge of infrastructure-as-code approaches such as Terraform
- Scripting experience using technologies such as Python or PowerShell
- Ability to troubleshoot issues across networking, security, storage, identity, and integration layers
- Strong stakeholder communication skills with the ability to explain technical decisions clearly
