3-month contract, likely to extend up to 12 months
An independent consultancy advising insurers and reinsurers on risk, actuarial, data, and transformation. We're looking for an experienced data and platform engineering consultant to be the technical lead on a strategic data engagement for a major UK insurer (Global top three).
The role
The engagement starts with a short blueprint sprint for a central exposure data asset. That asset supports reinsurance, accumulation management, portfolio steering, and regulatory reporting. You'll work alongside our actuarial and operating-model leads, and you'll own the technical side of the proposed solution.
What you'll do
- Assess the current data landscape: source systems, vendor feeds, pipelines, datasets, and consuming applications.
- Design a target data architecture and an exposure data model/taxonomy on a modern lakehouse platform (Databricks).
- Shape integration patterns for legacy policy platforms (including COBOL cores) that don't support real-time access and make them survive a future core replacement.
- Set out options for address standardisation, geocoding, and base address providers.
- Outline how external peril models and datasets (flood, subsidence, and wider perils) are enabled on the platform, including real-time spatial queries at point of quote.
- Define vendor-agnostic API approaches so exposure data can be consumed by any downstream system.
- Lead technical workshops with client data, IT, and business teams, and translate findings for C-suite audiences.
- Contribute to phased 6/12/18-month roadmaps, data governance, and data-quality frameworks.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What you'll bring
- 10+ years in data engineering, data architecture, or platform engineering, including senior or lead roles.
- Hands-on depth in Databricks (Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, Spark) and cloud data platforms (AWS or Azure).
- A track record of integrating with legacy core systems and designing API/integration layers.
- Experience in insurance or reinsurance, ideally with exposure, catastrophe, or accumulation data. Familiarity with standards such as OED/ACORD is a plus.
- Working knowledge of geospatial data and geocoding, and of UK address data (e.g., AddressBase, PAF).
- Exposure to peril models and data providers (e.g., JBA, Environment Agency, BGS) is highly desirable.
- An understanding of the regulatory backdrop: PRA expectations on climate and data governance, Solvency II reporting.
- Consulting-grade communication: you can run a workshop, write the board slide, and defend the architecture.
