About the Role

We are undertaking a search for an experienced Data Protection Officer to join an established financial services organisation at an important point in its development. This is a senior appointment with genuine scope to shape the organisation’s approach to data protection, privacy, data governance and the responsible use of technology.

The successful candidate will provide independent oversight and expert advice while working closely with senior leadership and key functions across the business. The Data Protection Officer will have the opportunity to strengthen governance, enhance privacy risk management and ensure the organisation remains well positioned to respond to evolving regulation and technological change.

This is not a conventional BAU privacy role - it requires an individual who can combine the independence expected of a Data Protection Officer with commercial judgement, strategic thinking and the confidence to influence and challenge at senior level.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the organisation’s independent Data Protection Officer, providing objective advice, oversight and constructive challenge on data protection and privacy matters.
  • Advise senior leadership and business stakeholders on complex legal, regulatory and privacy issues.
  • Oversee and further develop the organisation’s privacy framework, including policies, governance, accountability and supporting controls.
  • Monitor regulatory developments and assess their impact, translating requirements into clear and practical actions.
  • Identify, assess and report significant privacy risks, ensuring appropriate escalation and management.
  • Advise on new products, services, business initiatives and technology programmes, ensuring privacy is considered from the outset.
  • Work closely with Technology, Data, Digital, Cyber Security, Product and artificial intelligence teams on privacy considerations arising from new and emerging technologies.
  • Provide specialist advice on artificial intelligence, machine learning, automated decision-making, analytics and other data-driven applications.
  • Advise on Data Protection Impact Assessments, data subject rights, international transfers, data-sharing, data governance, outsourcing and third-party arrangements.
  • Work closely with Legal, Compliance, Risk, Information Security and Technology teams to ensure a coordinated approach to regulatory risk.
  • Support engagement with relevant supervisory authorities and other external stakeholders where required.
  • Promote a strong culture of data protection and accountability across the organisation.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify, strengthen and modernise the organisation’s privacy arrangements.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Candidate Experience

The successful candidate will be an experienced Data Protection Officer or senior privacy professional with a strong track record in financial services. Financial services experience is essential, given the regulatory complexity and governance environment in which the organisation operates. Ideally, the candidate will be a qualified lawyer with significant in-house experience and a strong technical background in data protection and privacy law.

The individual will bring:

  • A recognised legal qualification, ideally with substantial specialism in data protection and privacy.
  • Significant in-house experience within financial services and the credibility to operate effectively with senior executives and business leaders.
  • Proven experience as a Data Protection Officer or in a senior privacy leadership role, with a clear understanding of the independence and accountability required.
  • Strong knowledge of the United Kingdom General Data Protection Regulation, the Data Protection Act 2018 and the wider United Kingdom privacy landscape.
  • Practical experience advising on technology, data and artificial intelligence, including the legal and regulatory considerations associated with emerging technologies.
  • Experience across Data Protection Impact Assessments, data subject rights, international transfers, data-sharing, outsourcing, third-party risk and data governance.
  • A track record of developing or enhancing privacy frameworks, governance structures, policies and controls within a complex organisation.
  • The ability to interpret complex regulation and translate it into clear, proportionate and commercially practical advice.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management and influencing skills, with the confidence to engage with and challenge senior stakeholders constructively.
  • Sound judgement and the ability to assess risk, prioritise material issues and provide proportionate recommendations.
  • A pragmatic, solutions-focused approach and the ability to operate effectively in a changing regulatory and technological environment.
  • The ability to anticipate emerging privacy risks and help the organisation respond proactively.
