About The Role
As a Principal Product Data Scientist at British Airways, you will play a pivotal role within the Operations Delivery Intelligence (ODI) directorate. You will be responsible for leading the development, deployment, and maintenance of advanced decision-support software products that leverage machine learning and optimization techniques to enhance operational efficiency. Working within integrated product squads, you will act as the technical owner of one or more production-grade data science codebases, ensuring the delivery of scalable, reliable, and impactful solutions. Your expertise will help translate complex operational challenges into data-driven models that support real-time decision-making across various airline functions. This role offers an exciting opportunity to influence operational outcomes on a global scale, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and mentor junior data scientists, all while contributing to the airline’s mission of connecting Britain with the world.

Qualifications
- Master’s degree or higher in Data Science, Machine Learning, Operational Research, or a related field, or 6+ years of relevant industry experience
- 4-6 years of experience working on production-scale machine learning or optimization software products
- Proven experience in developing industrialized data science or machine learning software solutions
- Strong proficiency in Python and modern ML tooling
- Experience working with cloud platforms and deploying scalable data science solutions
- Solid understanding of software engineering best practices, including testing, CI/CD, and version control
- Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to structure complex technical and business challenges
- Effective communication skills for engaging both technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience in relevant domains such as transportation, airlines, or operations is preferred
Responsibilities
- Act as the technical owner of one or more production-grade data science product codebases, ensuring their reliability and performance
- Lead the end-to-end delivery of decision-support software, from prototyping to deployment and maintenance
- Analyze complex operational business problems and identify opportunities for data-driven optimization
- Drive modeling, system design, and implementation decisions, balancing technical feasibility, business value, and system robustness
- Prototype, build, and deploy machine learning and optimization models using Python
- Design and develop robust data ingestion, cleaning, and processing pipelines to support model training and inference
- Implement orchestration pipelines and CI/CD processes to streamline deployment workflows
- Ensure software quality through comprehensive logging, error handling, and automated testing
- Harden algorithms to handle operational and data edge cases effectively
- Quantify product adoption, monitor performance, and measure the value delivered to the business
- Engage with stakeholders to gather requirements, provide updates, and incorporate feedback into product development
- Support integration of decision-support tools into operational processes, ensuring seamless adoption
- Communicate technical approaches, trade-offs, and results clearly to both technical and business audiences
- Mentor junior team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement
- Contribute to agile development practices, including version control, code reviews, and predictable delivery cycles
