About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Founding Data Scientist / Machine Learning Scientist to join a dynamic, service-based business that is in the process of building its in-house data science capability for the first time. This fully remote role offers the opportunity to work closely with the leadership team, with occasional visits to our London office. As a foundational member of the data science team, you will be instrumental in shaping the organization’s data-driven strategies and solutions from the ground up. Your primary focus will be on developing predictive models for customer churn and complaint propensity, alongside other forecasting and analytical projects that support business growth and customer retention initiatives.
This role provides genuine ownership of the entire data science lifecycle, from conceptualizing modeling approaches, building and validating models, to deploying scalable, robust, and production-ready solutions. You will have the autonomy to define methodologies, document processes, and establish best practices that can be embedded across the organization. Your contributions will directly impact the company's ability to understand customer behavior, optimize retention strategies, and enhance overall service delivery.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong blend of technical expertise, business acumen, and hands-on experience in developing customer-centric predictive models. Candidates should have a proven track record of building churn propensity models, particularly within subscription-based or service-led environments where customer retention is critical. Experience working independently and managing the full lifecycle of data science projects is essential, as is familiarity with deploying models into production environments.
Key qualifications include proficiency in Python and SQL, experience with ML model deployment, and a solid understanding of forecasting and predictive analytics. Familiarity with the Microsoft technology stack and experience analyzing unstructured data using large language models (LLMs) will be advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to design, document, and communicate modeling approaches clearly and effectively, ensuring solutions are scalable, repeatable, and robust.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement customer churn and propensity models to identify at-risk customers and optimize retention strategies.
- Take ownership of the end-to-end data science process, including data collection, cleaning, feature engineering, modeling, validation, and deployment.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business needs and translate them into effective analytical solutions.
- Design scalable, automated, and production-ready models that can be integrated into existing systems and workflows.
- Document methodologies, model assumptions, and performance metrics to ensure transparency and reproducibility.
- Monitor and maintain deployed models, making iterative improvements based on performance data.
- Contribute to the development of best practices and standards for data science within the organization.
- Explore additional predictive analytics opportunities, including forecasting and analyzing unstructured data with LLMs.
