Data Tech Lead
Manchester | Hybrid (3 days in the office) | £80,000-£85,000 + up to 15% bonus
I'm working with an ambitious, technology-led business in Manchester that's investing heavily in its data capability and looking to appoint a Data Tech Lead.
Reporting directly to the Chief Data Officer, this is an opportunity to shape the future of the data engineering function while leading a small team of Data Engineers.
This isn't a role for someone taking their first step into management. They're looking for a proven leader who has experience building and developing high-performing engineering teams, whilst remaining technically hands-on and credible.
The Opportunity
You'll be responsible for creating an environment where Data Engineers can do their best work.
As a player-coach, you'll balance technical leadership with people management, setting high engineering standards while coaching, mentoring and developing your team. You'll work closely with the CDO and stakeholders across the business to deliver scalable, reliable data solutions that support the organisation's continued growth.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
