Role Title: Database Administrator for MS SQL / Sybase

Location: London

Duration: 31/12/2026

Work setup: 3 days onsite/week

Pay Rate: £402 per day all inc. (PAYE through Umbrella)


Role Description:

Key Responsibilities / Requirements

UAT & production support

  • Provide responsive DBA support during UAT cycles and BAU operations.
  • Triage and resolve database-related incidents (availability, performance, connectivity, capacity, job failures, data issues) and drive issues to closure.

Hands-on database administration (SQL Server & Sybase)

  • Perform core DBA activities: installation/configuration support, patch coordination, database builds, upgrades, migrations (where applicable), and environment readiness.
  • Manage and monitor DB health: backups/restores, integrity checks, index/statistics maintenance, space/capacity management, and scheduling/monitoring jobs.

Performance & stability

  • Diagnose and remediate performance issues (locking/blocking, long-running queries, indexing strategy, tempdb/log contention, poorly performing stored procedures).
  • Proactively monitor and tune database performance with an operational mindset (reduce incidents, improve resilience).

Data protection/recovery

  • Ensure appropriate backup strategies, restore testing, and recovery procedures are in place and understood.
  • Support recovery activities (point-in-time restore, object-level recovery where possible), with clear documentation and control.

Security & access management

  • Administer roles/permissions in line with least-privilege principles, supporting onboarding/offboarding and audit requirements.
  • Support encryption/credential management where required and work with security teams on remediation actions.

Collaboration and escalation

  • Work closely with application support, infrastructure, and vendor teams; translate technical findings into clear impacts and next steps.
  • Provide clear handovers/escalations with evidence (query plans, logs, wait stats, blocking graphs, error outputs).

Adaptability and communication

  • Comfortable in a fast-moving divestment environment with changing priorities and tight timelines.
  • Able to work beyond the DBA role providing generic support to our user base when and if required.
  • Strong written/verbal communication; able to explain technical issues to non-technical stakeholders.

Key Skills (must have)

  • Strong operational experience as a DBA across:
    • Microsoft SQL Server (2016/2019/2022)
    • Sybase ASE (16)
  • Strong SQL and troubleshooting capability:
    • Query tuning, indexing, execution plan analysis
    • Locking/blocking analysis, deadlock triage, transaction log management
    • Backup/restore strategy and execution (including restore testing).
    • Monitoring and alerting discipline; ability to create/adjust thresholds and dashboards.

Nice to Have

  • Automation/scripting (PowerShell).
  • Exposure to audit/regulatory controls, change management, and ITIL processes.
  • Experience supporting vendor or packaged banking applications.

Candidate Profile (what “good” looks like)

  • Calm under pressure, structured problem solver, strong ownership from triage through resolution.
  • Strong documentation habits (runbooks, recovery steps, standard changes).
  • Comfortable working directly with UAT teams and application owners to isolate root causes (app vs DB vs infrastructure).
