Senior Data Center Technician (Break/Fix)
Chester, England | Permanent | £40,000 to £43,000 plus benefits
Two month paid training programme across AI data centre sites in the UK and Europe
One of Europe's fastest growing AI infrastructure providers is looking for an experienced Senior Data Center Technician (L2) to join its Chester operation. This is a genuine career move rather than a job change. You will begin with a fully supported two month training programme across multiple AI data centre sites throughout the UK and Europe, working alongside experienced engineering teams and gaining live exposure to hyperscale environments, NVIDIA GPU infrastructure, InfiniBand networking and large scale AI deployments, before returning to Chester as part of a highly skilled operations team.
The role combines advanced technical delivery with shift leadership. You will be the primary technical escalation point before incidents go to the Remote Operations Team, you will lead the complex activities on shift and you will mentor the junior technicians around you.
What you will be doing
- Supporting the day to day operation of mission critical AI data centre environments.
- Delivering Smart Hands services including server reseats, drive replacements, transceiver swaps, cable replacements, inspections and photographic documentation.
- Carrying out Rack and Stack deployments, structured copper and fibre cabling, PDU installations and infrastructure commissioning.
- Leading the deployment of enterprise server infrastructure supporting AI and GPU compute environments.
- Diagnosing and resolving hardware, server and networking faults across mission critical systems.
- Supporting Ethernet and InfiniBand fabric deployments within high performance computing environments.
- Managing hardware lifecycle activities including RMAs, inventory management and asset tracking.
- Resolving complex issues involving BMC/IPMI, server hardware, DPUs and InfiniBand networking.
- Producing technical runbooks, Root Cause Analysis reports and operational documentation, and keeping ITSM and Jira tickets accurate.
- Acting as the customer facing technical representative on shift where required.

What we are looking for
- Previous experience working within a live enterprise or hyperscale data centre.
- Strong knowledge of Rack and Stack deployments and structured cabling.
- Hands on server break/fix and hardware diagnostics experience.
- Knowledge of Ethernet networking and data centre infrastructure.
- Experience using ITSM platforms and maintaining accurate technical documentation.
- Strong troubleshooting, organisational and communication skills, and the ability to work independently in a mission critical environment.
- A genuine interest in building a long term career in AI infrastructure.

Desirable
- NVIDIA GPU infrastructure, AI or HPC exposure, InfiniBand networking, BMC/IPMI management, DPU deployment, customer facing technical support and RCA report writing.
- A qualification in IT, Computer Science or Engineering, data centre or IT infrastructure certifications, vendor certifications from Dell, HPE, Lenovo or Cisco, and CompTIA Server+ or Network+.
Hours are 35 per week on early and late shifts between 07:00 and 19:00. Candidates with a stable permanent history in data centre environments will be viewed favourably, as this is a long term opportunity with structured progression into senior engineering, operations and leadership positions.
