Your Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Datacom Database Specialist to play a pivotal role in a strategic legacy modernisation programme. This is a unique opportunity to work on a high-profile migration initiative involving a long-standing Mantec application, where your expertise will be instrumental in unlocking the architecture of a complex Broadcom Datacom (Datacom/DB) environment and enabling its successful transition to VSAM.
As a key member of our delivery team, you will combine deep technical analysis, reverse engineering, and migration expertise to ensure data integrity, minimise business disruption, and support the modernisation of critical business systems. You'll collaborate with talented architects, developers, and business stakeholders while contributing to a significant legacy transformation project.
- Analyse and document complex Datacom database architectures, including schemas, data structures, relationships, and access patterns.
- Reverse engineer legacy database designs, data models, and application interactions within the Mantec ecosystem.
- Investigate and identify Datacom dependencies across PL/1 applications, batch processes, utilities, and integrations.
- Design and support migration strategies from Datacom/DB to VSAM, ensuring a seamless and reliable transition.
- Create detailed technical documentation, data mappings, migration specifications, and design artefacts.
- Partner with development and testing teams to assess data impacts, support data conversion activities, and validate migration outcomes.
- Perform deep-dive analysis, troubleshooting, and problem resolution across legacy database environments.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including architects, developers, testers, and business stakeholders, to drive successful project delivery.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
