Job Purpose

To supervise, coach and develop trainee debt advisers, ensuring they achieve the knowledge, skills and competence required to deliver high-quality debt advice in line with MaPS quality standards and organisational policies. The role is responsible for quality assurance, case supervision, progression reviews, placement support and safeguarding advice quality while helping to build a sustainable pipeline of skilled debt advisers across the Debt Free Advice partnership.

Supervise and develop Trainee Debt Advisers

Provide day-to-day line management, mentoring, coaching, technical supervision and pastoral support to Trainee Debt Advisers, enabling them to develop the competence, confidence and professional standards required to achieve accreditation and deliver high-quality debt advice. Provide the level of management expected of colleagues across the organisation and in line with internal policies and procedures.

Deliver learning, quality assurance and progression

Support trainees throughout the Debt Free Academy learning and accreditation pathway by delivering technical coaching, soft skills development, reviewing casework, conducting live and recorded interview observations across telephone, video and face-to-face advice, providing constructive feedback, assessing competence against agreed quality standards, and identifying learning and development needs to support timely progression.

Coordinate placements and partner engagement

Plan, coordinate and oversee trainee placements with Debt Free Advice delivery partners, building effective relationships with host organisations to ensure placements provide safe, high-quality learning experiences that support trainee development and programme objectives.

Monitor performance and manage programme delivery

Monitor trainee performance, progression and wellbeing, proactively identifying and managing risks to learning, quality or programme delivery. Contribute to programme reporting, maintain accurate records, and support the successful delivery of the Debt Free Academy against agreed milestones and quality standards.

Contribute to training and continuous improvement

Support the design, development, coordination and delivery of induction, policy, technical training, skills development and continuing professional development (CPD) activities across the Debt Free Advice partnership. Promote best practice, share learning, and contribute to the continuous improvement of the Debt Free Academy and wider training programme.

Contribute to the wider Training Team

Work collaboratively with colleagues across Toynbee Hall and the Debt Free Advice partnership, undertaking additional duties as required to support the effective delivery of the Debt Free Academy, organisational objectives and funder requirements.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

Essential Criteria

Experience and Skills:

  • A minimum of two years' recent experience delivering debt advice, with a thorough understanding of debt advice legislation, guidance and best practice.
  • Hold a valid MaPS-accredited Level 4 Certificate in Money Advice Practice (or equivalent recognised debt advice qualification).

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships, influence others and communicate technical information clearly.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, maintain accurate records and meet deadlines.

Personal Attributes:

  • Ability to work independently and proactively without supervision.
  • Capacity to remain calm and effective under pressure, adopting a “find a solution, no blame” attitude.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of auditing or reviewing debt advice case files, assessing the quality of advice provided and delivering constructive feedback to improve adviser competence and performance.
  • Experience of undertaking quality assessments against recognised quality standards (e.g. MaPS Standards) and using findings to support adviser development and continuous improvement.
  • Understanding of the role and objectives for MaPS funded debt project and the role of the Financial Conduct authority for Debt Advice
