About the Role
The main purpose of this role is to deliver multi-channel debt advice and casework to clients within our communities. We want people who are passionate about giving an effective service to those most in need, therefore you will need to demonstrate an ability to engage skilfully with clients who may be vulnerable and distressed.
You will have proven skills from working in a busy environment, prioritising work towards achieving targets and managing your own caseload. You will be a highly motivated strong team player with excellent interpersonal and organisational skills.
You will have the ability to understand written and oral information of some complexity; have good numeracy skills sufficient to compile accurate financial statements, provide comprehensive debt advice and support clients with complex debt issues. You will need to have effective oral and written communication skills for the purposes of negotiation and reporting.
Responsibilities
- To provide debt advice casework primarily to Oldham residents.
- Sensitively explore the client’s household financial circumstances including details of income, outgoings, and debts.
- Identify areas where clients could maximise income or minimise expenditure, such as benefit claims, and offer support in claiming benefits or signpost/refer to other agencies/teams where appropriate.
- Act on behalf of client where required but also provide information and advice to empower clients to act on their own if capable.
- Explore options and implications to enable the client to make informed decisions.
- Provide full casework to the client where necessary, identifying the debt issue through to its full resolution.
- Communicate or negotiate with third parties in writing and on the telephone.
- Provide advice and/or casework through a mixture of channels, predominantly face to face, digital, and written.
- Continually meet the requirements of the Quality Framework and engage with Quality supervision and support meetings.
- Meet targets as set by the organisation and project.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
