Location: Inverness-Shire, IV40 8AJ Salary: Competitive plus excellent benefits Schedule: Permanent / Full-Time (48 hours)
About the Role
Ready to impact a better future? As a Deck Rating in our Defence Maritime team, you’ll play a hands-on role in keeping our vessels operating safely and efficiently. Your work will help ensure essential maritime services run smoothly—creating a positive impact on the defence community and supporting safe operations at sea and in port.
You’ll be part of a team that keeps vessels prepared, maintained, and ready to serve. From supporting ship handling to ensuring safe working practices, your contribution will help deliver reliable operations that touch lives and support the future of maritime capability.
Core Responsibilities
As a Deck Rating, you’ll be entrusted with:
- Supporting berthing and slipping of vessels to ensure safe and smooth operations
- Carrying out ship husbandry tasks, including general cleaning and maintenance as directed
- Assisting with mooring and anchoring duties, including rope handling and deck operations
- Operating deck machinery (e.g., cranes) while adhering to safety procedures and training
- Supporting emergency preparedness through awareness of equipment, procedures, and safe working practices
- Contributing to environmental protection by following pollution-prevention measures

Requirements
Key Qualifications & Standards
You’ll be a great fit if you possess (or are eligible to obtain):
- SC (Security Clearance) or the ability to do so
- AB (Able Seafarer) ticket
- Valid Eng 1 medical certificate
- Relevant, up-to-date STCW qualifications
Skills & Attitudes
- Good communication and a collaborative approach to teamwork
- Strong awareness of health, safety, and environmental standards
Security / Compliance Requirements
- This role requires Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) clearance, which includes verification of:
- Identity
- Employment history
- Nationality
- Criminal record
Depending on the nature of the role, you may also need to obtain formal security clearance (e.g., CTC or SC), requiring additional background checks. Please note:
- UK residency requirements may apply for higher clearance levels.
- You will complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire to identify and accommodate any support needs.
