The role…
This role sits within GlobalData’s Media Division, and as a Defence Reporter you will be working across the defence desk’s three sites and digital magazine, which provides leading free- and subscription-based intelligence and news to industry, military services, and our wider international audience.
Reporting to the Editor-in-Chief (Defence), the Defence Reporter will produce daily copy covering the global defence industry, developing key contacts to provide actionable intelligence.

Working closely with colleagues across editorial and intelligence, the Defence Reporter will be responsible for finding, pitching, and writing stories that matter to our global audience.
What You’ll Be Doing…
- Breaking news & exclusives: Generate, pitch, report and publish accurate breaking news—prioritising original reporting and exclusives
- Source development: Build and maintain a strong network of sources and use it to advance stories responsibly
- Procurement-first reporting: Cover acquisition and capability decisions end-to-end and explain the drivers and implications
- Features & analysis: Produce explainers, analysis pieces, and longer-form features that reveal the “why”, “what next” and operational/market impact behind the headlines
- Investigations: Pursue deeper, high-impact stories using documents, open-source methods, data and expert interviews—while meeting legal and editorial standards
- Live coverage: Run live blogs and rapid updates during major events
- Newsletters: Contribute to daily newsletter output—curating key developments and adding original reporting and context
- Interviewing: Conduct interviews with senior officials, military leaders, programme executives, and subject-matter experts
- Editorial collaboration: Work closely with the Editor-in-Chief and the defence desk to plan coverage, refine angles, and improve story presentation
- Travel: Attend national and international defence exhibitions and conferences

What We’re Looking For…
- Strong journalism background with previous experience in a similar role and ideally within the defence or related industries
- Demonstrated ability to break news and deliver exclusives through source-building, persistence, and strong reporting judgement
- Experience using programme documents, open sources, data, and cross-checking to validate claims and build defensible stories
- Careful handling of sensitive information; sound understanding of verification, attribution, and risk
- Great organisational skills and the ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines
- Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, preferred
- Native/near-native English speaker
