We're expanding our defence safety capability across air, land, maritime, WOME and broader defence roles. Broaden your experience, contribute to our evolving digital safety capability and progress towards professional registration.
AtkinsRéalis is a world-class engineering services and nuclear organisation delivering some of the most complex and critical programmes across defence, aerospace, nuclear and other highly regulated sectors.
Join our established Safety & Environmental Assurance community; knowledge sharing and collaboration are at the heart of what we do. You'll benefit from:
- Formal technical assurance, peer review and access to experienced practitioners and subject matter experts.
- Domain Communities of Interest and professional networks.
- Regular team meetings, knowledge-sharing events and informal mentoring.
- Career development support aligned wherever possible to your experience, interests and goals.
We aim to align assignments with your skills, interests and career goals while balancing client and business needs. We welcome applications from people with relevant Armed Forces, MOD, industry or other highly regulated-sector experience, including those returning after a career break. Assignments could include:
- Safety assurance for major UK defence acquisition and in-service programmes.
- Digital safety-case transformation, including structured Claims, Arguments and Evidence and improved use of live safety information.
- Pan-domain work involving enterprise services, information systems, autonomous or digitally enabled capabilities.
- Independent assurance, safety governance and improvement of safety management systems.

Delivering safety engineering and assurance activities across complex defence programmes, you’ll apply structured safety methods, produce clear evidence and help clients make robust decisions throughout the lifecycle.
- Support the development, maintenance and delivery of safety cases, safety assessments and safety management plans.
- Create and maintain hazard logs; support hazard identification, risk assessment and risk-reduction activities.
- Develop clear safety arguments and manage the evidence needed to support acceptance and operation.
- Apply proportionate safety analysis techniques such as HAZID, HAZOP, FHA, PHA, FMEA/FMECA, FTA, ETA and Bow Tie analysis.
- Derive, allocate, trace and verify safety requirements across the engineering lifecycle.
- Produce high-quality technical reports, presentations and client deliverables.
- Contribute to safety working groups, assurance reviews, audits and multidisciplinary engineering decisions.
- Build effective relationships with clients, delivery partners, operators, suppliers and assurance authorities.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
