We have an opportunity for a Degree Apprentice (Level 6) Civil Engineer to join our Apprentice Programme in our Civil Engineering team based in Bristol, starting in 2027. This exciting opportunity will provide you with hands-on experience and academic qualifications to launch a successful career in Engineering.
Join our Bristol team as an Apprentice Civil Engineer, where you will develop your technical knowledge and practical skills while gaining valuable experience working on real projects alongside experienced engineering professionals.
Key Responsibilities
You will be based in our Merchants house office and part of a team of 14 civil engineers based across our Bristol, Almondsbury and Gloucester offices. Our work includes drainage, levels and external works design-supporting both the planning approval process and the subsequent construction of sites. You will have the opportunity to contribute across a wide range of sectors, supporting both private and public sector clients.
As an Apprentice Civil Engineer, you’ll work alongside experienced engineers and technicians, developing your technical capability while contributing to the delivery of civil engineering designs from concept through to construction.
Working as part of a multidisciplinary project team, you will contribute to our Buildings service offering and collaborate with civil engineers, technicians and structural engineering colleagues. Through real project experience, you’ll develop your understanding of drainage and external works design while building the technical and professional skills required for your future career.
Day To Day You’ll Be
- Supporting the delivery of civil engineering designs from concept through to construction.
- Contributing to the Buildings service offering as part of a multidisciplinary project team.
- Working alongside civil engineers, technicians and structural engineering colleagues.
- Building your understanding of drainage and external works design.
- Developing your technical knowledge and practical civil engineering skills through real project experience.
Earn while you learn. Whichever apprenticeship route you take, your tuition and qualification fees are on us. You will work towards a Level 6 Civil Engineering degree in conjunction with one of our Training Providers. Your training provider and study arrangement will be discussed further during the recruitment process.

To help you feel supported and connected during your apprenticeship, you’ll spend four days a week working from the office alongside your colleagues.

About You
You’re adaptable, resilient, collaborative and curious. You stay calm when things change, keep going when challenges come up, enjoy working with others, value different perspectives and like sharing ideas, asking questions and finding better ways to solve problems.
Qualifications: For our Level 6 apprenticeship, you will need to achieve a minimum of 112 UCAS points from one of the following:
- A Level: BBC (excluding General Studies). You must have Mathematics at grade B or above and one other analytical science subject at grade B or above. Analytical science subjects can include Physics, Biology/Human Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Further Mathematics and Design and Technology.
- For Exeter you will need: ABB.
- BTEC (Level 3) Extended Diploma: DMM. This must include a Merit or above in Mathematics and Further Mathematics in Construction Units. Accepted courses include Civil Engineering, Aerospace, Construction and the Built Environment and Mechanical Engineering.
- UWE: Also accepts Aeronautical Engineering, Applied Science, Electrical/Electronic Engineering and Operations/Maintenance Engineering.
- Exeter: You must have DDM. Also accepts Building Services Engineering Construction, Operations/Maintenance Engineering, Computer Engineering, Manufacturing and Environmental Sustainability.
- Coventry: You must have DDM.
Scottish Highers
Four SQA Highers at A, B, B, B, including Mathematics. Higher Applications of Mathematics is not accepted.
Irish Highers
H3, H3, H3, H3, H3, H4, with at least H3 in Mathematics and one other Analytical Science subject.
International Baccalaureate
32/655, including HL5 in Mathematics (Analysis and Approaches) and HL5 in another Science subject, including Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Design Technology, Physics or Environmental Systems and Societies.
Other Equivalent Qualifications May Be Considered.
You must also have:
- GCSEs: 5 GCSEs (or recognised equivalent), with a grade 5-6 (B) or above in Mathematics and English Language. Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Mathematics are also accepted.
