Tetra Tech is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Apprentice Civil Engineer to join our Design team in 2027. This is an exciting opportunity to begin a rewarding career in Civil Engineering, earning a salary while studying towards a fully funded degree through a recognised university apprenticeship programme. Employed by Tetra Tech and supported by experienced engineers and technical specialists, you will gain invaluable practical experience while developing the academic knowledge needed to become a successful engineering professional.
You’ll be joining a collaborative team of design professionals within a high-performing consultancy. With decades of experience and a reputation for technical excellence, our design business spans engineering, architecture and development services. You will contribute to projects that respond to the challenges of urban growth, sustainability and resilience, helping to design infrastructure that supports communities and creates better places to live and work.

Working alongside experienced engineers and technicians, you will contribute to projects from early-stage concept development through to detailed design and construction support, gaining broad experience across the full project lifecycle.
The role offers the opportunity to develop knowledge across areas such as structural design, highways and access design, drainage and water management, earthworks, utilities and site infrastructure. You will work closely with colleagues from a range of technical disciplines, helping to develop coordinated and practical engineering solutions for our clients.
As your knowledge and experience develop, you will begin using industry-standard design and modelling software and learn how engineering drawings, calculations and technical documentation are produced.
Throughout your apprenticeship, you will be supported by your university and a dedicated workplace mentor who will help you build your technical capability, professional confidence and the practical experience required to succeed both academically and professionally.
Your Impact in this Position
You will play an important role in supporting the design and technical delivery of building and infrastructure projects that help shape towns, cities and communities.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
