Job Summary

An exciting opportunity exists for an engineer with Radio Frequency (RF) experience or relevant telecommunications knowledge, and a keen interest in Radiation Hazards (RADHAZ), to contribute to cutting-edge defence projects. As a Defence Electromagnetic Authority (DEMA) Radiation Hazards (RADHAZ) Engineer, you will be part of the DEMA RADHAZ Team, delivering critical, enterprise-wide Defence services that enable military capability through effective use of the electromagnetic spectrum worldwide.

The role is focused on ensuring Defence systems, personnel, and platforms are protected against the effects of RF radiation hazards. You will work within a small specialist team (typically three people), conducting RADHAZ trials and assessments on Defence assets to ensure strict compliance with UK statute law. A bespoke training package is in place to enable the successful applicant to gain the unique knowledge and skills associated with this role.

Working Pattern

  • Roles may be suitable for hybrid working, combining attendance at the permanent duty station with home working by informal, voluntary agreement. Currently, this allows for up to two days per week working from home.
  • The post involves extensive travel. During testing phases, the post holder will be required to work away from home at other sites for periods of up to two consecutive weeks.

Due to the security requirements, this position is open to sole UK nationals only.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job Description

Under the guidance of Senior Engineers, you will develop deep expertise across several electromagnetic disciplines, with a dedicated focus on RADHAZ safety engineering. The RADHAZ team is ultimately responsible for ensuring the safe deployment and co-existence of high-power Electronic Defence Capability. You will receive daily mentorship from a Team Leader who will guide you through a structured training and professional development framework.

Leveraging a suite of advanced electronic test and measurement equipment, you will execute hands-on RADHAZ trials on front-line Defence systems. You will analyse complex field data alongside your team, directly contributing to the technical reports produced by the Task Manager. These reports serve as the authoritative evidence confirming that military assets comply fully with UK legislation, such as The Control of Electromagnetic Fields at Work Regulations 2016 (CEMFAW).

This is a highly active engineering role that extends far beyond the office environment. It involves regular heavy manual handling activities to deploy specialised field instrumentation. Furthermore, you will occasionally be required to undertake physically demanding tasks, transporting equipment over long distances and across arduous, rugged terrain to test assets in their true operational environments.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Further Information

The Civil Service embraces diversity and promotes equal opportunities. As such, we run a Disability Confident Scheme (DCS) for candidates with disabilities who meet the minimum selection criteria.

As a result of the changes to the UK immigration rules which came into effect on 1 January 2021, the Ministry of Defence will only offer sponsorship for a skilled worker visa under the points-based system, where a role has been deemed to be business critical. This role does not meet that category, and we will not sponsor a visa. It is therefore NOT open to applications from those who will require sponsorship under the points-based system.

Should you apply for this role and be found to require sponsorship, your application will be rejected and any provisional offer of employment withdrawn.

The Ministry of Defence requires all candidates who are successful at interview to declare any outside interests. These declarations will be discussed with successful candidates following the interview process and before a formal offer of employment is made, as some outside interests may not be compatible with MOD civilian roles. This will not, in the majority of cases, prevent employment in MOD, but it is a measure that must be taken to ensure that appropriate mitigations can be put in place to manage any potential,
