Job Overview
Band 4 Dental Nurse Developmental Post Leading to Band 5 Dental Nurse
CNWL are pleased to offer an exciting internal development opportunity for motivated Dental Nurses who are ready to take the next step in their professional career. We are inviting applications from enthusiastic and committed Band 4 Dental Nurses to join our structured Dental Nurse Development Programme, designed to support progression towards a Band 5 Dental Nurse role within Community Dental Services. This is a developmental post. The programme will support the successful applicant to gain a recognised post-registration qualification, develop leadership capability, build confidence in clinical practice and evidence the competencies required for progression to Band 5.
The anticipated timescale for completion of the programme and achievement of the required competencies is 18 to 24 months. Progression to Band 5 will be dependent on successful completion of the required qualification, achievement of the agreed competency framework and satisfactory completion of the developmental objectives. Should the postholder not meet the required competencies within the agreed timeframe, they will remain employed at their originally appointed Band 4 grade and will not progress to Band 5.
Main Duties of the Job
The successful applicant will be supported to develop across four key pillars:
- Clinical Skills
- Patient Safety and Quality Care
- Leadership
- Development and Learning
As part of the programme, the postholder will undertake an approved post-registration dental nursing qualification, funded by the service. They will also complete internal development activities, including leadership learning, reflective practice, shadowing opportunities, service-based competencies, audit and quality improvement activity.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
