School of Education - Department Manager (maternity cover)
INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY
This full-time post is available for a year from 16 November 2026 on a fixed term basis until 15 October 2027. Applications for secondments will be considered subject to agreement from your current line manager.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a fixed term Department Manager (DM) based in the School of Education within the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS) as maternity cover.
The Department Manager is a key member of the department, working very closely with the Head of Department and as a member of the Department Leadership Team (DLT), their role is to help develop the department’s strategic and operational plan while ensuring the day-to-day delivery of operations as the professional services lead for the department. The DM works closely with other Faculty School and Department Managers and becomes part of the University-wide Department Manager network. This is the ideal role to learn more about and become part of a department’s research, education and business engagement activities and is an ideal first step to more senior roles across HE. Applicants should note that the post holder may be deployed across the Faculty to support other Departments if required.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
