Role: Deputy Chief Engineer – Submarine Systems Division Location: Dorset Position Type: Permanent Clearance: Must be eligible for UK Security Clearance (SC)
About the Role
We are recruiting a Deputy Chief Engineer on behalf of a leading defense and maritime technology organisation. Working alongside the Divisional Chief Engineer, you will drive engineering lifecycle execution, system architecture, and solution roadmaps across complex submarine and underwater systems. In addition to providing technical leadership, you will act as line manager and mentor for System Design Authorities (SDAs).
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership: Chair technical reviews, oversee architectural design, and set design baselines across divisional projects.
- Roadmaps & Strategy: Drive technology roadmaps, evaluate market trends, and review system specifications for key products.
- People Management: Direct line management, mentoring, and capability planning for System Design Authorities.
- Customer & Business Support: Support SDAs on complex customer programs and partner with Business Development and Product Management teams.

What We're Looking For
- Strong Systems Thinking mindset with the ability to translate operational requirements into complex engineering solutions.
- Experience across the engineering lifecycle (design, modeling, testing, acceptance, or support).
- Background in at least one of the following domains:
- Sonar / seismic arrays or acoustic & RF systems
- Sensor data, signal processing, or telemetry
- Real-time decision support systems or industrial control/safety systems
- Towed array, cable handling, or electric actuation systems
- Weapons, countermeasures, or noise/vibration data management
- Submarine design concepts, modeling, or simulation
