Deputy Chief Underwriter – Reinsurance
City of London | Full-time | On-site
About City & Commercial Insurance Group
City & Commercial Insurance Group (C&C Insurance Group) provides insurance and reinsurance solutions from nine locations worldwide. It is regulated in the UK, UAE (DIFC), Guernsey, the Cayman Islands and the Seychelles, and writes business across more than 100 countries, including Takaful and Re-Takaful. The Group has particular depth in surety and credit, alongside property, engineering and other traditional classes. It combines technical discipline with the agility of an independent, founder-led group, and is expanding into new international markets.
The Role
We are looking for a Deputy Chief Underwriter to join the Group's senior underwriting leadership in London. You will work alongside the Chief Underwriter and share responsibility for the reinsurance underwriting function across all classes and jurisdictions. You will shape how the Group underwrites, as well as what it writes.
This is a role for a well-rounded, whole-account underwriter. You will bring real depth in surety and credit reinsurance and the breadth to take sound technical and commercial decisions across property, engineering, marine, aviation and casualty. You will also have the judgement and presence to lead the underwriting function in your own right.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Key Responsibilities
- Own and maintain the Group Underwriting Manual. Refine guidelines, authorities and appetite statements as the portfolio, the market and the Board's strategy change.
- Put the Board's underwriting strategy and risk appetite into practice, and report back on portfolio performance, exposures and emerging risks.
- Monitor and manage aggregate exposure and concentration of risk by class, territory and counterparty, so the portfolio stays within appetite and capital limits.
- Assess, price and approve complex reinsurance risks, with a focus on surety, bonds and credit as well as traditional lines.
- Build and maintain active relationships with global and regional reinsurance brokers and cedants, bringing in quality business that fits the Group's appetite.
- Lead, coach and develop the underwriting team, building technical strength, consistency and accountability.
- Work closely with Finance, Claims, Actuarial, Compliance and Risk to support profitable, sustainable and well-governed growth.
- Contribute to product development, portfolio optimisation and the Group's expansion into new markets.
About You
- Substantial senior reinsurance underwriting experience, with recognised expertise in surety and credit.
- Strong working knowledge of property, engineering, marine, aviation and casualty. You are a generalist by outlook, not a single-class specialist.
- Multi-jurisdictional experience is essential. You will have underwritten across several regulatory regimes and international markets.
- A proven record of managing underwriting guidelines, exposure and accumulation within a regulated governance and risk framework.
- Established relationships with the London market and international broking community, and the credibility to open new ones.
- A people leader who develops talent and builds a collaborative, high-performing team.
- Sound commercial judgement, strong analytical and pricing skills, and the ability to present complex matters clearly to the Board and senior stakeholders.
- ACII or equivalent professional qualification.
- Willing to work on-site in the City of London, with international travel as required.
