Shape the future of one of the NHS's largest and most complex estates portfolios.

At University Hospitals of Derby and Burton (UHDB), our estate is much more than bricks and mortar. It's the environment where outstanding patient care happens, innovation thrives and our people deliver life-changing services every day.

We're looking for an exceptional leader to join us as Deputy Director of Estates and Facilities Management - Commercial and Compliance.

This is not a traditional estates role.

Working alongside the Director of Estates and Facilities, you will help lead the strategic direction of a diverse and complex portfolio spanning commercial services, major contracts, compliance, governance, property, PFI arrangements and facilities management. Your influence will be felt across the organisation, shaping the environments, services and infrastructure that support healthcare for our communities.

The Role

As a member of the senior leadership team, you will:

  • Lead the commercial and contractual management of high-value estates and facilities services.
  • Provide strategic leadership for compliance, assurance, governance and risk management.
  • Drive value, efficiency and innovation across a broad portfolio of services.
  • Shape the future use and development of the Trust's estate, property and commercial opportunities.
  • Build strong partnerships with suppliers, system partners and external organisations.
  • Deputise for the Director of Estates and Facilities

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
