About the role
The Deputy Director of Field Campaigns & Elections will play a senior leadership role in delivering the Liberal Democrats' electoral ambitions.
- Directly line-managing a number of Field Heads of Campaigns, you will lead a team of Campaign Managers to develop and deliver winning campaigns in strategically important elections, ensuring our resources, people and campaigning expertise are focused where they can have the greatest impact.
- You will also lead a team of Regional Development Officers, supporting the development of party capacity, strengthening local campaigning organisations and growing our local government base across a broad geographical footprint. You will also line-manage our Best Practice function, including MP incumbency protection support.
This is a highly collaborative role requiring exceptional political judgement and the ability to build confidence and strong relationships across the organisation. You will work closely with Parliamentarians, candidates, volunteers, Party Committees, State and Regional teams, funding partners, donors and colleagues across the wider organisation.
Key responsibilities
Strategic leadership and electoral delivery
- Lead, develop and motivate high-performing Field Campaigns and Development teams, creating a culture focused on delivery, collaboration and electoral success.
- Lead the development and delivery of winning campaigns in strategically important elections.
- Develop clear strategic plans for each annual election cycle, ensuring that people, funding, and other resources are prioritised to maximise electoral impact.
- Ensure effective performance management, monitoring, and evaluation of campaigning activity, and identify opportunities to improve our approach and increase our chances of success.
- Build campaigning capability and organisational capacity across the Party, prioritising support where it can deliver the greatest electoral benefit.
Candidates and campaigning
- Lead and implement a strategic approach to Parliamentary candidate engagement, development and support.
- Ensure candidates and local parties have access to the advice, expertise and support they need to run effective campaigns.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with key candidates, Parliamentarians, local parties and volunteers.
- Ensure learning and best practice from successful campaigns is captured and shared across the organisation.

Organisational leadership and collaboration
- Build strong relationships across the Party to ensure teams work collaboratively towards shared political and electoral objectives.
- Maintain the confidence of key stakeholders, including Parliamentarians, candidates, Party Committees, volunteers, State and Regional funding partners and donors.
- Develop strong links across campaigning, media, fundraising, Parliamentary activity and other areas of the organisation to maximise our collective impact.
- Work effectively with Party Committees and volunteers operating in governance roles, ensuring their confidence and engagement.
- Contribute to the wider strategic leadership of the Campaigns and Elections function and the Party.
Person specification
Essential experience and skills
We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:
- Exceptional strategic and political judgement, with the ability to make sound decisions in complex and fast-moving environments.
- Exceptional leadership and management skills, including the ability to lead, develop and motivate multiple complex teams.
- Exceptional planning and delivery skills, with the ability to develop and implement campaigns, projects and engagement programmes over the medium and long term.
- Exceptional ability to bring people together around a common purpose and build effective relationships across a complex organisation.
- Excellent understanding of political campaigning, including the ability to identify and apply effective campaigning techniques.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to adapt your approach to different people, situations and levels of seniority.
- Excellent judgement, discretion and diplomacy, particularly when working in highly sensitive or politically challenging environments.
- Good understanding of governance and volunteer-led organisations, including the ability to work effectively with Party Committees and volunteers and maintain their confidence.
- Good financial and commercial management skills, including experience in managing budgets and contracts.
- Proven ability to understand, support and motivate volunteers and to work effectively within volunteer-led organisations.
- Sympathy with the aims and values of the Liberal Democrats.
