Deputy Director - (UCD / GDS / Digital Transformation )

Deputy Director required to lead a refresh of the GDS service standards. The work is intended to move beyond standards for individual GOV.UK transactions towards a broader framework for digital public-service redesign and transformation.

The hiring team requires candidates to be based in the Manchester office, the onsite expectation is a minimum of x2 days per week in this office. Flexibility can be offered on this, candidates will also need to be flexible to attend more frequently, if required. There will likely be travel to London, varying between one day every two weeks or once a month.

• Active and significant experience in large scale, digital-enabled change programs within a digital context, requiring a combination of service redesign, cultural shift and transformative outcomes.
• The successful candidate will lead a refresh of the GDS service standards. The work is intended to move beyond standards for individual GOV.UK transactions towards a broader framework for digital public-service redesign and transformation. This requires a lot of engagement activity, bringing together stakeholders from across government and wider public services. The aim is to bring legitimacy for the refreshed standards, leading a team through this refresh process.
• The standards must continue to support the formal assurance and gated process through which government services, such as passport applications, demonstrate compliance before going live. At the same time, they must provide a practical framework for wider digital transformation initiatives. The team is working towards a well-designed and well led digital transformation. The successful applicant will help to pull this work together, someone with crossover experience between strategy, policy and programme delivery planning, with a track record of delivery at pace would be beneficial.
• Strong line management experience and able to get the best work from multidisciplinary teams.
• Working knowledge of service standards and strong public sector knowledge, so that they are not learning this from scratch.
• Confident communicator, the successful applicant will be carving out a clear role for the service standard landscape, that is increasingly complicated. The will need to convey the confidence that they can establish the service standard and take their team along with them.
