Role purpose
The Deputy Editor is responsible for the quality, consistency, and impact of Public Policy Projects’ editorial output.
Working closely with the Head of Content and Policy, who acts as lead editor for PPP, the postholder will help develop and deliver PPP’s publications and editorial strategy, manage the production and quality assurance of policy reports, commission and create specialist content, and build productive relationships with key stakeholders, including authors, partners, and contributors.
The Deputy Editor will also act as Editor of the Integrated Care Journal and will be responsible for its editorial direction, content pipeline, quality, and relevance.
This role owns editorial decisions and standards, working closely with marketing to ensure consistent standards and tone of voice across PPP outputs. The postholder will also play a key role in helping to manage PPP’s websites and delivering digital performance reporting.
This is an external-facing role; we are looking for candidates who are happy and willing to pick up the phone and feel comfortable engaging with senior stakeholders.
Key responsibilities
Editorial strategy
- Support the Head of Content and Policy in developing PPP’s publications and editorial strategy.
- Translate organizational and policy priorities into clear editorial themes, content plans, and publication schedules.
- Identify opportunities for original content and compelling stories that strengthen PPP’s profile and influence.
- Maintain an overview of editorial activity across PPP’s reports, journal, thought leadership, newsletters, and other publications.
- Ensure editorial activity is coordinated, purposeful, and aligned with PPP’s objectives.
- Lead on the use of AI to improve efficiencies in content production across the editorial strategy.
Editorial quality and publications
- Provide editorial review, proofreading, and sign-off for PPP policy reports, thought-leadership content, marketing materials, and other publications.
- Ensure all editorial output follows PPP’s house style, tone of voice, and quality standards.
- Improve the structure, clarity, accessibility, and impact of complex policy and healthcare content.
- Maintain website pages including report libraries, journal sections, landing pages, and other key website areas.
- Prepare and publish articles and reports supplied by editorial and programme colleagues.
- Add internal and external links, cross-references, calls to action, and related-content recommendations.
- Ensure content is written and structured in accordance with SEO and generative engine optimization best practice and assign appropriate keywords, categories, tags, descriptions, and other metadata.
- Ensure downloadable reports and supporting materials are uploaded, labelled, and organized correctly.
- Write social media posts to promote editorial content.
- Act as the editorial contact for PPP’s content-licensing arrangements, including PLS or any successor provider.

Content creation and commissioning
- Write, edit, source, and commission specialist health and public-policy content.
- Conduct interviews with policy leaders, healthcare professionals, partners, and other relevant contributors.
- Produce reports, articles, interviews, and summaries arising from online and in-person events.
- Write press release content to launch new reports.
- Develop clear briefs for commissioned writers and contributors.
- Provide constructive editorial feedback and manage content through drafting, revision, and approval.
- Maintain a diverse and relevant network of writers, experts, and potential contributors.
Integrated Care Journal
- Act as Editor of the Integrated Care Journal.
- Set and maintain its editorial direction in consultation with the Head of Content and Policy.
- Develop an editorial calendar and maintain a reliable pipeline of relevant content.
- Commission, write, and edit articles, interviews, commentary, and other journal content.
- Ensure the journal reflects developments and priorities across health and integrated care.
- Build relationships with contributors, sector experts, PR agencies, and sponsors.
- Ensure content is published effectively and promoted appropriately, including where appropriate in PPP communications and at PPP events.
- Write and post content on dedicated ICJ social media platforms.
- Review readership and engagement information and use it to inform future editorial plans.
- Liaise with the commercial team to update media packs, and place adverts on the website.
Partners, clients, and contributors
- Liaise with authors, clients, partners, PR agencies, and sponsors to deliver high-quality content.
- Liaise with report designer(s) to ensure consistency of layout, design, tone of voice across PPP reports.
- Work with other companies within the Dorson Group to identify new sources of analysis and insight.
- Build and maintain positive long-term relationships with external contributors.
- Provide editorial advice to partners and clients.
- Clarify briefs, intended audiences, deadlines, and approval arrangements.
- Manage expectations and resolve editorial issues professionally.
- Maintain appropriate standards of editorial independence, disclosure, and transparency.

Audience engagement
- Develop editorial plans for publication newsletters and other audience-engagement activity.
- Select and shape content for newsletters in collaboration with the Website and Digital Content Manager.
- Use readership and engagement insights to improve editorial themes, formats, and commissioning decisions.
- Identify opportunities to repurpose reports, events, and long-form content for different audiences and channels.
Event support
- Attend and support PPP events where editorial coverage is required.
- Conduct interviews with speakers, delegates, and partners.
- Represent ICJ as a media partner at events where appropriate; including potentially chairing panel discussions.
- Identify potential stories and produce timely follow-up content.
- Provide occasional operational support, including room or delegate management, photography, and microphone support, where required.
Skills and experience
Essential
- Professional experience in editing, proofreading, and content production.
- Excellent writing skills and command of written English.
- Experience editing complex, specialist, or policy-focused material.
- Experience commissioning and managing external writers or contributors.
- Strong editorial judgment and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple publications and deadlines.
- Excellent stakeholder-management and communication skills.
- Ability to give clear, constructive editorial feedback.
- Understanding of digital publishing, content management systems, SEO, and audience engagement.
- Confidence interpreting readership and engagement data.
Desirable
- Knowledge of health, healthcare, integrated care, or public policy.
- Experience editing a journal, specialist publication, or professional media platform.
- Experience working on policy reports or research-led publications.
- Experience managing sponsored, partner, or client-funded content.
- Familiarity with content licensing, copyright, and intellectual-property considerations.
