Job Description
Deputy Head of Clinical Services
West Midlands Hospital & Stourside Hospital
Our company is built on people caring for people. It is an ethos through which we’ve grown to be one of the largest independent healthcare providers in the world. You’ll help deliver the highest quality outcomes for our patients, whilst nurturing a welcoming environment that allows all our staff to develop their skills and careers as well as our services.
What you’ll bring with you
A commitment to the development of high-quality evidence-based acute care is essential, combined with personal drive, enthusiasm, creativity, and resilience. The role is ideal for a senior clinical leader aspiring to a role as Deputy Head of Clinical Services (Deputy Matron).
You will be working with the Head of Clinical Services (Matron), to assist in driving sustainable excellence in safety and quality of care and services.
The role of the Deputy Head of Clinical Services will be to support the Head of Clinical Services in ensuring the day-to-day operational management of the clinical services are in line with best practice. Therefore, it is a requirement that you are a strong leader working in a senior clinical role as you will be required to problem solve and provide direction enabling services to run safely and effectively which may on occasion require you to step in clinically. Communication is a key part of this role as you will be required to influence and change/challenge practices at all levels.
You will be responsible for assisting in the progression of meaningful changes to patient pathways and ensuring they are embedded into the service. The Deputy HOCS will act as a lead for all specialities, providing expert advice to nursing staff and the multi-disciplinary teams and taking on the duties of the Head of Clinical Services in their absence. You will have a broad range of knowledge and experience to support quality governance, incident management, and data analysis and action.
The Deputy HOCS will undertake data reports and incident reporting, analysis, and support the Head of Clinical Services with data requirements of the Hospital from the Clinical Governance requirements to the ICB reports and also actioning and embedding good practice from PSIRF incidents and the PSIRG meetings.
Although there will be a requirement to work across both sites as required, the Deputy Head of Clinical Services will be primarily based at Stourside Hospital to provide day-to-day leadership support on site and clinical assurance to the Head of Clinical Services.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
