Compensation: £37,820 / year

Description

To support the day-to-day delivery and management of all lighting and electrical requirements for Donmar productions and related projects to the highest possible standards.

To play a proactive part in the running and operation of the Production Department, the Deputy Head of Lighting will also, in conjunction with colleagues within the department, support effective planning and management of departmental and building maintenance across all Donmar premises.

To promote good working practices and uphold the highest professional standards at all times as well as representing the Donmar Warehouse externally within the wider Theatre community.

The Production Department is led by the Director of Technical and Production [DTP]. The rest of the Department is made up of:

  • Head of Lighting (Sound and Video Supervisor) [HoLSV]
  • Deputy Head of Sound and Video [DSV]
  • Head of Stage
  • Deputy Head of Stage
  • Head of Costume
  • Deputy Head of Costume
  • Production Assistant

Freelance Production Managers, Production Sound Engineers, Production Video Engineers and Stage Management teams are recruited on a show-by-show basis.

Duties and Key Responsibilities

Productions

  • To work with the Head of Lighting (Sound and Video Supervisor) [HoLSV] and creative teams to deliver all lighting and electrical requirements for Donmar productions and related projects to the highest possible standards.
  • To support the HoLSV in running the Lighting Department during fit ups, get outs, focus sessions, technical rehearsals and live performances, taking the lead as required.
  • To regularly program lighting desks (ETC APEX/EOS) across all spaces.
  • Attending production meetings, site visits, rehearsals, and performances as required.
  • Support the HoLSV in the design, build and installation of practicals and electrical effects.
  • Support the HoLSV and the Deputy Head of Sound & Video in the planning, delivery and maintenance of audio and video requirements on productions, including comms, cue lights and hearing loop equipment.
  • To provide show cover as Duty Tech or Lighting/Sound/Video operator for allocated productions as required.
  • To meticulously prepare productions for storage, transfers and tours, including creating thorough and detailed handover paperwork.

Departmental

  • To deputise for the HoLSV in periods of absence or as required.
  • To assist the HoLSV in the management of departmental and production expenditure, providing costings and keeping detailed records of spending.
  • In conjunction with the HoLSV, DTP, and freelance Production Managers to participate in the recruitment, management and scheduling of casual and freelance technicians.
  • To support the HoLSV in ensuring appropriate training and induction is given to all lighting staff.
  • With the HoLSV, provide technical and operational support, from a lighting and electrical perspective, for the work of other departments.
  • To provide cover for the DSV in the support of all Sound and Video work as required.

Maintenance

  • In conjunction with colleagues and contractors, to identify, plan and undertake maintenance, repairs and improvements to the Donmar’s buildings and infrastructure.
  • To support the HoLSV in liaising with and supervision of outside contractors carrying out technical and building maintenance.
  • To support the HoLSV in the preparation and running of maintenance work during designated dark periods allocated across the year.
  • To support the department and contractors in ensuring the upkeep and maintenance of Lighting/Sound/Video temporary equipment (via BS7909) and permanent infrastructure (via EICR).
  • To help ensure that all spaces and technical equipment throughout the building are legally compliant and well maintained, keeping maintenance records regularly updated.

Health & Safety

  • To work closely with colleagues in the Production Department to create, maintain and promote a safe working environment for everyone.
  • Maintaining a detailed and current knowledge of all Health and Safety legislation relevant to the work of the Production and Lighting departments.
  • Identifying hazards and completing suitable risk assessments for all departmental activities.
  • Producing and maintaining Health & Safety records relevant to the department and its equipment as required e.g., In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment, COSHH, LOLER, PUWER and CDM.

General

  • To support colleagues in the effective management of the Production Department, actively contributing to its effective operation and to its positive, proactive and collaborative ethos.
  • Support the DTP and Production HoDs with medium and long-term departmental planning, advising on new equipment, capital and maintenance spending.
  • To undertake job specific training as required by the Donmar.
  • To be a key holder for the Theatre building in Earlham St. and be responsible for its opening and locking up as required.
  • To actively participate in and support the Donmar’s Participation, Work Experience and Apprenticeship programmes.
  • To ensure that all creative teams and artists feel welcome, engaged and supported in the building and receive the highest level of technical support at all times.
  • Any other reasonable duties required to assist the Production Department or the Donmar as a whole.

  • At the request of your line manager or senior leader, take on other reasonable duties and responsibilities as required to support the needs of the team and the organisation.

Person Specification

Essential Requirements of the Role:

  • Demonstrable experience and understanding of working in lighting for live performance in a professional environment.
  • Prior full time or freelance experience working in the lighting department of a producing theatre.
  • Leadership skills and the ability to manage a team, including in fit ups and get outs.
  • Strong and current knowledge of the rigging, operation, maintenance and basic repair of lighting equipment.
  • Excellent working knowledge of ETC APEX/EOS control desks, networks, and dimmers.
  • Intermediate to advanced programming skills on ETC APEX/EOS control desks, including experience of programming mid to large-scale productions.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of TCP/IP networks.
  • Strong working knowledge of lighting control protocols (e.g: DMX, MIDI, MSC, OSC, sACN).
  • Ability to read, understand and implement technical drawings.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation related to the theatre industry. In particular LOLER, PUWER, CDM (2015), HSWA (1974), EAWR (1989).
  • Computer literate and experienced with either Microsoft Office or Google Apps Suite.
  • Ability to work well within a small dedicated team in a positive and collaborative manner.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and be a creative and resourceful problem solver.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good relationships with contractors and suppliers.
  • Comfortable and experienced in Working at Height.

Desirable Requirements of the Role:

  • Ability to produce and edit technical drawings in Vectorworks and AutoCAD.
  • Experience with recording and documenting shows via MLA, Vor, or Stamp.
  • Experience of making, adapting and repairing lighting practicals.
  • Experience and training in Working at Height using access equipment and PPE.
  • Working knowledge of Sound and Video technology, including control software.
  • Basic carpentry, metalwork and soldering skills.
  • Electrical qualifications (eg: BS7909).
  • Enthusiasm for and an interest in the arts.
