We are looking for a Deputy Head of Video to join the Guardian. This role reports to and supports the UK Head of Video in delivering our video strategy, overseeing daily editorial operations and ensuring the production of high-quality, impactful journalism.

The Deputy Head of Video has particular responsibility for the Guardian’s video news features, leading the delivery of ambitious original journalism on YouTube, establishing a distinctive video proposition that expands the reach and impact of our journalism.

Examples of the video news features team's work include the Green Line series and the On The Ground series, which sees our journalists reporting right from the heart of the action.

This position is offered on a permanent, full-time NUJ contract.

About the role

  • Lead and line manage producers in the video news features team
  • Work closely with the head of video and the head of documentaries to help coordinate the commissioning and production of all longform features and documentaries produced by the Guardian
  • Work with the head of shortform video in delivering the Guardian’s video strategy across YouTube, Instagram and TikTok as well as the Guardian’s own platforms
  • Act as a senior editorial decision-maker for video content, deputising for the head of video and attending meetings on behalf of the department as required
  • Ensure video output reflects the organisation’s editorial values, standards and brand
  • Work with editors and reporters throughout the Guardian to identify stories and reporting that can be developed into distinctive video news features
  • Drive audience growth, engagement and watch time on YouTube
  • Monitor performance and audience insights to inform commissioning decisions and strategy
  • Ensure efficient workflows and effective resource allocation within the news features video team to ensure projects are kept within budget at all times
  • Coordinate commissioning, production schedules and publishing priorities for news features video
  • Support the head of video in coaching and developing the video department, helping to set best practices
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, dynamic and high-performing team culture.
  • Collaborate with audience, social teams and marketing to maximise reach and engagement, and identify opportunities for experimentation and growth
  • Promote video-first thinking and work with Project Berger teams on programmes which enable colleagues to develop video skills
  • This is an office based role and will not involve regular on the ground shooting

About you

  • Significant experience in video journalism, digital publishing or broadcast news
  • Significant experience as an executive producer
  • Strong editorial judgment and understanding of journalistic standards
  • Experience managing editorial teams and production workflows
  • Significant experience of shooting and editing video
  • Proven track record of delivering a varied portfolio of high-quality long form video content for broadcast or digital audiences
  • Strong understanding of YouTube analytics
  • Excellent organisational, communication and leadership skills
  • Ability to make sound decisions under pressure and manage multiple competing priorities and deadlines
  • Experience commissioning freelancers and managing production budgets
  • Actively demonstrate inclusive leadership by promoting equity, valuing diverse perspectives, and addressing barriers that affect your team
  • Ideally, you’ll have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role
