Deputy Registrar

Portsmouth City Council

Local Government

Salary: Band: 5, £27,346 – £29,170 per annum (£10,938 – £11,668 for 14.8 hours), plus contractual overtime

Hours: 1 x 14.8 hours per week – working hours/days to be discussed at interview although one of those days would need to be a Friday. Plus 32 hours per annum contractual overtime (worked on Saturdays)

About the Role

We are looking for a confident, positive, and energetic Deputy Registrar to join our team. The successful candidate will have strong organisational, communication, and IT skills and thrive on assisting members of the public at key moments in their lives.

Your New Role

Working in the Portsmouth Register Office, you will be registering births, deaths, stillbirths, civil partnerships, and marriages.

  • You will be responsible for preparing certificates for members of the public and making appointments for people to come to the office to register births, deaths, stillbirths, and to give notice of marriages and civil partnerships.
  • The role also involves the duty of taking notices of marriage and civil partnership.
  • There is currently a requirement to work 32 hours per year as contractual overtime to cover Saturday ceremonies booked to take place at Portsmouth Register Office and licensed venues across the city. These hours are worked on a rota basis, working one in three Saturdays during each month. During the months of April to September, this is likely to increase to two in four Saturdays. These hours are in addition to the set 14.8 hours worked between Monday and Friday. Contractual overtime is reviewed annually and may fluctuate from one year to another.
  • There will also be occasional additional weekend work on Sundays and public holidays. These are allocated on a voluntary basis and not included in the 32 hours contractual overtime requirement. Payment is offered in return for working on Sundays and public holidays.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
