Company Description
Aylesbury Town Council is the first tier of local government, serving residents of the parish of Aylesbury Town and providing a wide range of local services. The Council manages key community facilities, including the public cemetery on Tring Road, six allotment sites, and the Jonathan Page Play Centre, which offers after school and holiday childcare for children aged 4 to 13. It supports local organisations and promising young sports participants through grants, and delivers a diverse programme of free community events such as Aylesbury on Sea and Parklife Weekend. The Council contributes to planning and licensing processes by commenting on applications, oversees the Mayor’s office, and has taken on devolved responsibilities such as grass verge cutting. Aylesbury Town Council is made up of 25 Councillors representing 14 wards, elected every four years, with the next election due in 2029.
Role Description
The Deputy Town Clerk is a full-time, hybrid role based in Aylesbury, with a mix of office and home working. This position supports the Town Clerk in the effective administration of the Council, including preparing agendas and reports, recording decisions, and ensuring that statutory and governance requirements are met.

Day-to-day tasks include:

- Coordinating Council and committee meetings
- Maintaining accurate records
- Managing correspondence
- Liaising with Councillors, partner organisations, and residents
- Assisting in overseeing Council services and projects
- Supporting community events and initiatives
- Contributing to policy development and implementation
The Deputy Town Clerk may be required to attend occasional evening or weekend meetings and events, and to deputise for the Town Clerk when needed.
Qualifications
- Strong administrative and organizational skills, including experience preparing agendas, minutes, and reports, and maintaining accurate records.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work constructively with Councillors, colleagues, partner organisations, and members of the public.
- Good understanding of local government or public sector environments, including basic knowledge of governance, compliance, and statutory procedures (or willingness to develop this knowledge).
- Proficiency with office software and digital tools, such as word processing, spreadsheets, email, and document management systems.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize workloads, and work both independently and as part of a team in a hybrid working arrangement.
- Relevant professional qualification in local government administration (e.g., CiLCA) or a commitment to obtaining such a qualification within an agreed timeframe.
- Experience supporting meetings or committees, including scheduling, logistics, and follow-up actions, is highly beneficial.
