About The Role
The Design / Development Engineer will join a Leeds-based specialist in piezoelectric devices, systems, and materials, working full-time on a permanent basis. The company supplies sensors, actuators, and transducers for extreme environments, with applications in non-destructive testing, condition monitoring, and flow measurement. The role involves designing and developing new products, taking concepts from initial specification through to prototyping and testing. Candidates should possess strong engineering skills, ideally with experience in mechanical or electrical design, materials knowledge, and proficiency in CAD software. A competitive salary package, dependent on experience, is offered alongside a pension scheme. This position suits an engineer seeking to apply their technical expertise within a niche and technically demanding sector.
An excellent opportunity for a Design / Development Engineer to join a well-established company!
Job Type: Full-Time, Permanent.
Salary: Competitive package dependent on experience, including Pension.
Location: Leeds LS13.
About The Company
The company specialises in high-performance, extreme environment piezoelectric devices, systems, and materials, offering a range of sensors, actuators, and transducer devices based on its novel piezoelectric materials, with applications in areas such as non-destructive testing/evaluation (NDT/E), condition monitoring, and flow measurement in demanding environments.
Piezoelectric materials are used in a vast and rapidly expanding range of actuators and sensors. They are the irreplaceable heart of systems such as medical ultrasound imaging, non-destructive testing (NDT), energy harvesting, and SONAR comprising a $15bn annual market. Ionix has developed a novel range of high-temperature piezoelectric materials, which can operate in extreme environments in excess of 600 °C and with which opens the opportunity to a whole host of new high-temperature and extreme environment sensing technologies.
Purpose
They are looking for an innovative Design & Development Engineer who will be a key contributor to the Product Development team, responsible for creating and implementing new ultrasonic sensor solutions for extreme environments (high temperature, radiation, pressure, etc.).

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
The company spans materials science, mechanical and electrical engineering, physics, and acoustics, and programming. As such, you will work closely with colleagues of various disciplines to provide cutting-edge solutions from pre-prototype stage through to full production.
The role will be varied, mixing conventional CAD design, process R&D, prototyping, testing, materials science, and manufacturing engineering. Because of this, there is scope for a candidate who does not fit the traditional mechanical design engineer mould to contribute, and so applications from those who have other applicable skills to offer will be considered.
You will serve as technical lead and project manager for projects of various complexities and lengths, as well as contribute collaboratively to the projects of others when required. As such, you should have an ability to work to deadlines, with a flexible approach to the varied tasks required of the role.
Applicants must have the right to live and work in the UK.
Responsibilities
- Design, prototype, assemble, and test sensors, by a range of acoustic, electrical, and mechanical means.
- Manage and contribute to projects to develop Ionix sensors & system products, including liaising with suppliers and stakeholders to ensure product or project requirements are met.
- Design and produce technical drawings of mechanical components and assemblies of devices using SolidWorks.
- Create thorough and accurate documentation where required for project management, experimental plans and records, quality, and intellectual property purposes.
- Present progress and feedback from development activities to technical and commercial colleagues.
- Provide technical advice and support the business development process, working with sales and technical colleagues to achieve the collective commercial goals of the business.
The Candidate
Essential Skills and Personal Attributes:
- A degree in Science or Engineering plus a minimum of 2 years industrial experience, or at least 4 years’ experience in research, product development, or mechanical design is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrable understanding and knowledge of CAD, preferably Solidworks, alongside knowledge of conventional manufacturing methods and techniques.
- A hands-on and analytical approach to development, capable of creating high-quality documentation and reports and plans.
- Comfortable working cross-functionally and developing into a subject matter expert.
- Confident producing and presenting technical specifications and presenting in formal design reviews and update meetings.
