DESIGN DIRECTOR

Permanent | Hybrid (London)
Salary up to £85k

About the Role:

We're partnering with an independent creative agency to recruit an exceptional Design Director to join their senior team.

First and foremost, they're looking for an incredible designer, someone with exceptional craft, strong ideas, and a clear creative point of view. You'll be deeply brand literate, with significant experience creating identities and visual systems, but you'll also have some exposure to the broader communications landscape. The work is varied, so you'll be comfortable taking brands beyond identity into campaigns, content, launches, and film.

The sweet spot is someone who combines the rigour and craft of a great brand designer with the broader creative thinking needed to take a brand out into the world.

This is a hands-on creative leadership role and an important hire for the agency. You'll work closely with the ECD, taking ownership of projects, setting the standard for design, and becoming a senior creative voice within the business.

You'll need the confidence to challenge thinking, get people excited about ideas, and present work brilliantly, both internally and to clients. Equally important is knowing how to do that within a small, collaborative team of experienced and strong-minded people.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

The work itself is varied, spanning brand identities and broader communications, predominantly across B2B with some B2C.

About You:

Ideally, you'll already be operating at Design Director level and have experience within a strong brand/design agency or smaller integrated creative agency. A background that combines classic brand design experience with some exposure to comms would be particularly interesting.

Your portfolio will be ideas-led and beautifully crafted, showing more than identity work alone. They would love to see:

  • Exceptional brand design and visual identity work.
  • Strong conceptual and ideas-led thinking.
  • Experience bringing brands to life across communications and campaigns.
  • Motion and moving image.
  • Art direction of photography and/or film.
  • Excellent typography and visual storytelling.
  • Confidence presenting and articulating creative ideas to clients.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, and inspiring other designers.

Beyond the portfolio, personality is hugely important. You'll be curious, articulate, and enthusiastic about what you do, with the confidence to have a strong point of view while remaining collaborative and open to others.
