Role

Joining a leading infrastructure contractor in Watford, this Design Engineer position offers the chance to work on challenging civil and structural engineering schemes. Ideal for engineers seeking to broaden their design expertise, it provides exposure to technical design work, client interaction, and professional development within an established engineering team.

Salary

£51,000 – £58,000 per annum

Location and Working Pattern

Based in Watford. Hybrid working is available following induction, with a minimum of three days per week in the office. The induction period requires full‑time office attendance for the first three months.

Client Overview

Our client is a major UK main contractor delivering large‑scale infrastructure and civil engineering projects nationwide. Their in‑house design team supports both temporary and permanent works, collaborating closely with site teams and clients to ensure robust engineering solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Produce design calculations, reports, and technical drawings for temporary and permanent works.
  • Undertake design checks and contribute to risk assessments.
  • Liaise with clients, project managers, and construction teams to ensure efficient design delivery.
  • Work with senior engineers to develop safe and innovative engineering solutions.
  • Support coordination of multiple workstreams and ensure quality control across projects.
  • Review designs in practice and resolve engineering queries.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering processes and documentation.

Must‑have Requirements

  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • A few years post‑graduate experience in design engineering.
  • Experience producing design calculations, design checks, and risk assessments.
  • Strong communication and client‑facing skills.
  • Ability to commute to Watford.

Nice‑to‑have Skills

  • Experience with temporary works design.
  • Use of AutoCAD, Revit, Tekla Tedds, STAAD, or similar software.
  • Working towards chartership (CEng/IEng).
